Mothers Little Helper

Still after all these years...39 approx, I still adore this beguiling tune, it was what turned onto them,
Its got great lyrics, a bit Morrissey like, but a really unusual topic for a young band to write about...
Anyway I am surprised that they've never done it, or tried to recently, as I think they'd do it really well!

Yep, great song but with "What a drag it is getting old" it's about as likely to be played as Time Waits For No One!

Haven't heard this song in years having gotten bored of it moons ago. Just listened to it on utoob. It's okay, a bit dated, but still does not make it on my wanna listen to list. Will admit, it would be interesting to hear the Stones do this live and MJ mockingly/ironically/sarcastically bark out "What a drag it is getting old...." I wonder who would do Brian's sitar part. From that same era I would take High and Dry as the better song, but that's another thread.

They played it back in the day. Check out 1966/67 shows on YouTube.

An all time classic as far as I'm concerned. On par w/ Paint It Black.

The point is not about "getting old". Daltrey and Townshed keep singing "hope I die before I get old" al 70.
I really love this song, and I wish they play it in Buenos Aires. (yeah, I'm dreaming. And as Alice said to the rabbit, "and why not?")

I see how it was different and clever and well-written and even well-played, but I don't like it very much. This and Stupid Girl are the two weakest songs on Aftermath, as far as I'm concerned. I don't see how this could ever work live.
I'd love them to play I Am Waiting. It probably wouldn't work either, but it might result in a beautiful disaster.

The stones do a great version of MTH on the Hawaii 1966 bootleg. It's on YouTube! Live it rocks . Similar live feel as paint it black to me . That Hawaii 66 bootleg is a great example, with very good sound , of a typical 1966 show. Lots of Brian in the mix too!

+1

But in fairness they had tuning problems on MLH.

I think the sitar and electric guitar make such a cool sound together. Interesting how the Stones can write a song about Diazepam and make the lyrics so clever and catchy

Re: Mothers Little Helper

No sitar. Just a 12 stringer and a slide.

No? The Stones are absolute geniuses at coming up with unique sounds. I just assumed Brian on sitar and Keith on guitar were both playing that lead riff. Someone also mentioned sitar on one of the earlier comments

It's a good and memorable song, with an intriguing sound (like a lot of the tracks on the Aftermath record).

Maybe that first line can be gently altered or hummed by Jagger?

Possibly my favorite pre-Beggars song but I prefer the outtake in which the song simply fades out rather than the album version with its ironically cheerful & abrupt ending.

There's sitar on Paint It Black.

Here's Mick and Keith on MLH:

«The strange guitar sound is a 12-string with a slide on it. It's played slightly Oriental-ish. The track just needed something to make it twang. Otherwise, the song was quite vaudeville in a way. I wanted to add some nice bite to it. And it was just one of those things where someone walked in and, Look, it's an electric 12-string. It was some gashed-up job. No name on it. God knows where it came from. Or where it went. But I put it together with a bottleneck. Then we had a riff that tied the whole thing together. And I think we overdubbed onto that. Because I played an acoustic guitar as well».

- Keith Richards, 2002

«Mother's Little Helper is a very strange record, like a music hall number, with an electric twelve-string on it, which made it very distinctive».

- Mick Jagger, 2003

The ending was a mistake I agree. Great track though

It's a very nice song to use as a cell ringtone...
What a drag it is getting old ...pause...What a drag it is getting old
Especially at my age...

One of my favorite Stones songs, ashame this and so many other songs from the 60s have been ignored by the band.

The most glaring omission from "GRRR" a few years back.
It was understandable leaving "Midnight Rambler" off, because of length, but "Mother's Little Helper" was quite a hit in the states in 1966.
