Some of my favorite Live Cuts that I may pick over the studio versions...
Sympathy - Ya Ya's (KR and MT Kill those solos)
SFM - Brussels Affair Official Release
Stray Cat Blues - Ya Ya's
Midnight Rambler - Ya Ya's (Love '72 versions 2, but this one's embedded for life)
Fingerprint File - LA '75 Official Release (Great Wyman Bass)
SMU from Flashpoint or Tokyo '90 Boots may get honorable mention, but it may be more from fond, faded memories of the spectacle of that opener with Continental Drift / Explosion / Keith...

The bass on these live song is played by Mr Wood. Both guitars are played by MJ and KR, and Bill played synthesizer

In general, I always prefer studio versions, and in fact there are not a lot of live albums I listen to. Anyway, my 5 cnts:
Midnight Rambler (Get Yer Ya Ya's Out or Brussels)
Little Queenie (Get Yer Ya Ya's Out)
Love in Vain (Get Yer Ya's Out)
Going to a Go-Go (Still Life)
Time Is On My Side (Still Life)

Queenie is a Live-killer but which studio-album is it on?

No! I miss Ian Stewart's boogie piano on that track. It's the perfect studio Version which can't be improved. Of course, the song is fun to hear in concert but it can't match the original.
IMO the studio Version of Love in vain is rather stiff and boring (as is Midnight rambler). Both songs came to life on stage, and I would rate the GYYO Version (no overdubs!) and the Leeds 1971 recording as definitive. There were great Versions on the 1972 tour too, though.

<I was pretty disappointed that they weren't even able to do the song justice in 2012 when it was more or less a mess.>
How was it a mess? I loved that version.
I totally agree about Whip and Detroit (indeed), though!

Of course it's all a matter of personal taste, but imho in 2012 Around And Around did not rock, not to even speak of roll... It sounded like a tentative rehearsal, not a fully-fledged stage performance. And there was a lack of coordination between the guitars.
Dandy, btw, you mentioned Cracking Up earlier in this thread. What we have is a BBC recording (more or less live in the studio), but no officially released fully produced studio recording. Don't want to sound teacherous, but...
