Rip This
"In My Place" was trans formative for them....I can still remember vividly where I was on a business trip in Europe having breakfast at the Michelangelo Hotel in Forli Italy the first time I heard it.

In 1980 Mick said rock music is a very limited form of entertainment and "its all been done".
So I guess, in some respects he would also agree with Martin.

Yet for about 20-25 more years the rock format was a heavy/steady seller and a top genre among the mainstream audiences, steadily it went downhill and right now rock/alternative is probably sadly at its popularity nadir.
Mumford And Sons followed up two triple platinum albums with an album that has struggled to reach gold. Black Keys followed up two platinum sellers with a 400k seller. Foo Fighters saw their sales drop by 50% just between 2011-2014. AC/DC followed up a triple platinum album with an album that has struggled to reach gold even with a tour and a Grammy performance. Even a "smash" in the genre like Arctic Monkey's AM still managed to sell about 700k in two years when pop/rap/country superstars sell that in two weeks. "Superstars" in the genre like Jack White and Arcade Fire can't even reach gold in 2015. Beck's album got near gold but only because of all the Grammy hype. And let's not talk about all the old acts, they can't even reach 100k.
Admittedly, it isn't a genre that lives and dies by sales and chart positions like pop and others, but it is practically non-existent on the pop radar. There's not even a Creed/Nickelback type of "purist disdain" act who is catching on with non-rock audiences.
Rock right now it's out.

Isn't that about what Main Offender sold initially? It didn't go gold, did it?

If you read the text it's not about whether Coldplay is a good band or not. It's about the fact that there is not much to add to the format of rock music anymore.
Pretty much everything is already done. Chris Martin says rock music has run its course and people should move on. That's what it's about. Nothing else.

Main Offender has sold 400-450k worldwide, around 230k in the US.
