'Time Waits For No One' album

I was going through my Stones album collection today, and came across this 1979 compilation.
I honestly can't understand why the Stones chose to under-promote it from the moment they released it, to the point where they didn't even release it in the U.S. It's a great 'best of' album with some lesser-known gems from the silver-era (cough, "Dancing With Mr D." cough) and would have made a perfect companion peice to Made in the Shade--something like a volume one and volume 2. It also has a cool cover; it's different for them.

Anyone have thoughts about this album?

Side A:
Time Waits For No One
Bitch
All Down the Line
Dancing With Mr. D
Angie

Side B
Star Star
If You Can't Rock Me/Get Off Of My Cloud (live)
Hand of Fate
Crazy Mama
Fool to Cry

Love it. Excellent comp. I don't care for all the tracks on it (Angie, the live one) but otherwise it's hilariously awesome. Just like SUCKING IN THE 70S!

Does it make sense compared to HOT ROCKS or REWIND? HELL NO! Of course not. But it's still genius!

I think it was a contractual compilation but whatever.

By the way for completists:

This was for decades the only way to get the complete version of Time Waits For No One ( a few seconds longer till Charlie stops drumming instead a fade out). This complete version was released lately again on the japanese iorr sacd.

Loved the cover , too.

The Stones ditched the UK Decca compilations for lack of quality control...
...and in 1979 they put out this one themselves...

"they didn't even release it in the U.S."

I was gonna say I have no memory of this whatsoever, and that explains why.

In 1978 the Stones' contract with Atlantic/WEA came up for renewal.
They stayed with Atlantic in North America but signed to EMI for the rest of the world.
"Time Waits For No One" was issued by Atlantic/WEA outside of North America in 1979 as a contract filler and had the catalogue number COC 59107
The COC preifix was the one used under the Atlantic contract and continued to be used in North America after 1978. In the UK we got the CUN prefix.

The sleeve certainly has a 1979 new wave/punk feel to it.

My sister picked this album up for me when she went on vacation in Mexico in the early 80's since it wasn't available in Canada. I actually don't know if I ever played it since I had all the songs already.

It was too early for a CD release and didn't stay on catalogue for very long.
There was a cassette: [www.discogs.com]

Interesting. I got a copy of this when I worked in a record store in the USA, maybe we got it as a promotional copy. I claimed it as "mine" as soon as it came into the store. Always thought it was a good compilation and had good sound. Mine has a sticker on it that reads: IMPORT - Performance Distributors, New Brunswick,N.J. and has a slice (promo/cut-out?) in the lower left corner. COC 59 107 and Germany & France codes as well.

The fact that it says IMPORT also explains why I have no memory of it as not all record stores in the U.S. carried imports on a regular basis.Depending on what record store you worked at - small local or large chain - probably has something to do with it.One of the small local record stores I frequented (Off The Record in Santa Monica)carried lots of imports, but I was mostly focused on Jamaican reggae imports c.79. I also was buying a few bootlegs at the time, and these usually had an 'import' sticker slapped on them to avoid copyright problems I suppose. I bought some live Hendrix, Zeppelin, Stones, Doors, etc. on vinyl (still have them of course), but for the most part the sound on them was terrible audience recordings. With all that said, I may have run across this Stones comp. but probably wasn't interested in another greatest hits, hence the no memory of it. With a loud/gaudy looking cover like that though (which I happen to like), you'd think it would jar a memory - but no.

Hi
I have the Portugese and the German copies. There are different colours on the cover. ( ex. light yellow and dark yellow on the right side of the front)

Also , Itwas the first time you could clearly hear the line " Your Tricks with fruit...." which was pretty cool for a 16 year old!

With no songs at all from 'Some Girls', you could figure they tried to lurk on the new fans they had gotten with that album. The artwork also suggests it to be in line with the 'Some Girls' cover.

Strange album, it was released worldwide (except the U.S.) but charted only in Australia, it spent a week on the Top 100 at #98 on June 18, 1979.

I have a couple of copies of the German vinyl and I must say this has to be the slimmest slab of vinyl ever.

You can practically roll it up!

REALLY?! I just presumed it was an 'energy crisis' thing, it being 1979 and all.

interesting.
