From the Appleford book, under “Torn And Frayed”:
“There were a lot of rooms and all the different instruments were set-up in separate rooms,” says Price. “I went into that room, picked up the headphones and started listening, and just started playing the organ. It was just for fun. They did a bunch of takes on it, and I never knew that they had used it until I saw the record.”

The one song I wonder if it may be a LA product is 'Sweet Black Angel". Mainly because of the acoustic guitar, and it being in tune. Its just conjecture, but I ask myself if they would have ended up with a well recorded acoustic guitar, a keeper track out of Nellcote.

Agreed -add the fact that according to Jimmy Miller Sunset was solely used as an overdub studio for (mostly) vocals, as Sunset was better equipped for overdub sessions and Jagger liked to combine it with tour preperations. Miller states all vocals of BB, LIB and Exile were done in LA.

I think now that they didn't record any songs at Sunset except JWSHF, mainly as Watts and Wyman weren't at the overdub sessions in Sunset, AND the fact that they didn't book the big room but the smaller studio 2 which was mainly used for overdubs.
This means that about half was recorded in England, and the other half at Nellcote.

Yeah, I now believe “Let It Loose” was at Olympic (I used to think France), although it was attributed to Nellcote in some interview. Where did they get a Mellotron then? Has to be Olympic with LA overdubs.
“Casino Boogie” was said to be a Richards song done in Nellcote. This song is never talked about except for the lyrics. They did have an electric piano in France because Hopkins used it on “Happy” I believe.
“Loving Cup” sounds like Stargroves era, but that’s just a hunch.
We know they recorded a ton of stuff at Nellcote, but what was used is the question, and did they work on previously recorded songs there? We also know they spent most of 1970 in and out of Olympic and Stargroves.
Is Charlie Watts even on “Turd On The Run”. Are those just brushes? I’ll have to re-listen. That song very well could have been just a guitar part from Nellcote with LA overdubs.

excellent observations and deductions. The train of thought about certain keyboards not even being available at certain sessions had never occurred to me. I can see a lot of the grunt work being done down in Nellcote. (Maybe some keepers).
Turd on the Run has always sounded like an edit to me. Like they chopped the best 3 minutes out of a 15 minute brush/uprite fest.

They both agree they did versions of many songs on several locations so its hard to determine which version became the master. And so we are back at snap, rimshots and guitarsounds...

RE: the Whitlock remark, in the bonus material for "Stones in Exile", where Mick and Charlie revisits Stargroves and Olympic, Mick reads from a list of where they recorded what. I sense the list is based on somebody elses research, maybe what we wrote here around the time of filming. Anyway. Mick suggests, reading from the list, that Just Want to See his Face is from Olympic, something Charlie refuses to accept. Charlie suggests Nellcote. They both agree they did versions of many songs on several locations so its hard to determine which version became the master. And so we are back at snap, rimshots and guitarsounds...
RE: Sweet Black Angel. At their trip to Stargroves in the same bonus material, Mick remembers SBA as being recorded there.
Mick's list is very close to the one Mathijs posted here. At Olympic he mentions Shake Your Hips, Sweet Virginia, Loving Cup, IJWSHF, Stop Breaking Down and Shine a Light.
Mick states his Nellcôte list has nine tracks (but only mentions Rip This Joint and Casino Boogie by name).
“Turd On The Run” could have been recorded anywhere. I don’t think anybody ever mentions that song in an interview or book, etc. Every other song from Nellcôte has been mentioned specifically at some point, or was included in the Hopkins Tapes.
What is hinting towards Nellcote to me is that after the burglary in July 1971 he got Micawber Tele. The Tele/Ampeg combination must have been really inspiring as it turns up on all tracks we now believe were recorded at Nellcote. Turd has just about the same guitar sound as Casino Boogie, RTJ, ADTL etc which all are the Tele through an Ampeg SVT or V-series amp.

This is what my best guess is. Hints are the sound of the guitars at Nellcote (Ampeg) or the snare of Charlie, with a distinct difference between Nellcote (lots of snap, loud rimshot sound) and Olympic (more room reverb).

That makes sense. It definitely sounds like a Telecaster.
