Saw Stevie at MSG, '72…don't really remember much! Then again a couple years later drove from Syracuse to Binghamton in a raging snowstorm to see him and Wonderlove. FFF was just out….this was a fantastic show…GRREAT band!

I saw Stevie Wonder with the Stones at the Denver Coliseum in 1972.

I remember him being led onto the stage by two assistants.

His performance was great, and it turned me into a life-long Stevie Wonder fan.

However the Stones perfomance was even greater.

This one show ranks as the best concert of my lifetime.

Yep. July 25, 1972. Evening show. My first Stones show ever. I arrived in the afternoon just hoping to catch the buzz from the afternoon show and was among the first to enter for the 2nd show. Had 5th row center seats via the lottery! I remember politely enjoying Stevie Wonder, but really just marking time until the Stones came on. I even felt a little ripped off when SW and members of his band joined for the encore. I only wanted to see the Stones up there and it diluted the experience in my 18 year old mind.

I saw SW again later that Summer as part of the John Lennon One to One benefit concert. Again, very little recollection of SW. I was there to see John.

believe the only time they did the encore together was at Jagger's birthday at MSG.

I've wondered about this myself. Was the Uptight/Satisfaction encore done at any other show?

I saw him open for the Stones at the Denver Coliseum, June 1972. The last song in in his set was 'For Once In My Life'. He had the entire audience about 3' off the floor. 'The joint was rocking.' After Stevie and his band left the stage, the lights came up and towers of speakers rose up on either side of the stage. The audience, still vibrating from what they had just heard, knew they were in for something special. They weren't disappointed.

Well, I had the experience of him NOT opening for the Stones -- he mysteriously failed to appear at the Houston afternoon show. I think there may be a reference to it in Ladies & Gentlemen.

By the way, I think "Signed, Sealed, Delivered" and a few others are brilliant.

Yes, I saw him opening for the Stones on July 19, 1972 at the old Boston Garden. I liked his show, the Stones did not join him, as I recall. He surely did NOT outshine the Stones! Still, he was an excellent warm up act!

I took a tour of the Motown office and studio in Detroit. During the tour, the
guide mentioned that Stevie received the name "wonder" because he was able to
Play any instrument given to him. By this I assumed they ment within a very
short amount of time. Stevie was 12 or so when arriving at Motown. If you are in the area, the tour is well worth the effort. The recording studio itself was once a two car garage - a very small space that produced such classic tunes from a long list of artists. The room next to the studio has divots in the wood floor from the secretaries tapping their feet against the wood floor while these songs were being created.

Naturalist was right those early 70's Stevie Wonder albums were pretty special -
At least to my ears. Talking book and Innervisions especially.

Yes I did. Chicago in 1972. He opened with "Superstitious". Fantastic set and one of the great opening acts for the Stones.

Here is a pretty cool interview with Stevie from 1973 where he talks about touring with the Stones and Keith Richards (end of the interview):

The stones side of the story about the annoyance with Stevie is that Stevie didn't show for a gig, left them high and dry, which is a no-no in stones land - you always make a gig. I believe the gig was down south. This is all documented.

Saw 2 shows at MSG including Mick's pie fight party. Wasn't really into Stevie at the time but he did a good opening set. The jam was cool and very loose. Mick escorted Stevie around the stage and they "danced" together and traded vocals.

I love the anecodote in Robert Greenfield's "STP" where Stevie's drummer (I believe) fake injects Keith with a hypodermic needle as Keith was about to go on stage.

I'm sure everyone has seen this but just in case (Edit: Obviously the image is reversed as Mick and Keith didn't play left handed):

Cool. July 14 was Detroit, right?

So that's two first hand confirmations (New York and Detroit). Plus, there's the version on Philadelphia special, which implies Philly. Can anyone who was there at the Philadelphia shows confirm it?

Thanks!

I was at the Pittsburgh show in 1972. My very first Stones concert. Stevie Wonder was great and the Stones were even better. I had no idea that over 40 years and 50 plus shows later I would still be following these guys around the world. All I can say is if I had the opportunity to do it all over again I would do exactly the same thing. It's been a great run!
