too long - opening with electronic drums? no way. not a chance. quick strike is the mo for the opener.

They use the same opening inEurope and in USA
SFTD is a song where they use a lot of pyro's, smoke, special lightning effects etc.
Because of the fact that at least 75% of the shows in Europe start in daylight is that the reason why I think they don't open with SFTD

I think GOOMC of PIB

Who says that they open SFTD with those damn eletronic drums? Would be a great time to NOT use them. Besides they have already opened with a drumloop in 94 with NFA, which turned into Charlie's live drumming. So it could easily be done. The only reason I could see them not opening with it is because of the song's length, and because they would lose a prime song that showcases their respective soloing. It's the perfect tune for Jagger to do a bunch of showy shit and Keith to play a 12 minute solo. If Ron were still around he could join in too.
PIB mighht be extrememly cool.
Those are the two I pick

HTW is too slow for an opener....

SFTD is not a opener - the drums in the beginning, the song begins slowly ....

The opener must be a faster song that kicks ass and get people in the right mood right from the beginning like:

Brown Sugar, Street Fighting Man, Start Me Up, Satisfaction, Under My Thumb, JJF....

Just thought - what about: all down the line, bitch?

Excellent call: ""All down the Line".

I don't think All Down the Line would be a good choice TODAY.Too late. Jagger can't scream like he did in the 70s when the song was very well performed. And the song unfortunately needs the horns today.

Bitch is horrible today with the horns right at the beggining. They never open with the horns - fortunately !

Brown Sugar and JJF were done lately. So, don't count on them. And Brown Sugar was NOT a good choice in 2002/03 : the sound was too weak.It was not like in 1972/73.

HTW could be an opener, alhough it's a bit too slow. But people know the song and they also can sing along with Mick.

Sympathy would be an excellent choice : lots of percussions like with Not Fade Away before the Stone appear, a 6 ou 7 minutes version. Lots of red lighting (but it's daylight in Europe, though...). People would SING and DANCE right at the beginning).

IORR : a rather fast rocker. People know and like the song very well and can SING the chorus with Mick. Very good choice.

PIB can also be a very good opener. People would go crazy in stadiums.

HTW was the opener for the '75 & '76 tours. Very effective.

HTW was also the opener at the Olympia and Brixton shows in 95.
And at the Capitol Theatre show in 97.

Satisfaction in 1998 - it won't be the opener in 2005/6
JJF in 1999 - it won't be the opener in 2005/6
Brown Sugar in 2002/3 - it won't be the opener in 2005/6
Street Fighting Man in 2002/3 - it won't be the opener in 2005/6
Start Me Up in 1989/90 and 2002/3 - it won't be the opener in 2005/6

Nobody expected Not Fade Away being the opener for VLT, so let's suprise.

BUT I suppose it could be Tumbling Dice ...

I would like Sympathie as an opener but as mentioned before a lot of effects would not work if it's not dark in Europe.

I think it's maybe Paint it Black (would be awesome) or indeed IORR or maybe something no one expects like Not Fade Away.

Cheers,

What about You got me rocking?

I forgot about those two. It indeed may very well be You got me Rocking or Tumbling Dice. So i guessed about six songs so to be honest i don't have a clue :-)

I hope it wont be You got me Rocking. Never find anything special in this song.

You got me rocking has a great opening riff that's why it is suitable for opening song

It WON'T be Rough Justice - I'll guarantee you that. Jagger's smart - no way he opens with a song that 90% of the paid customers haven't a clue about. No way.

HTW may be a tad slow - but it's proven its mettle before and it's a crowd pleaser - so that's why I'm sticking with it. 3:30 - in and out with a quick KR solo and no piano "extras."

I vote for Have You Seen Your Mother Baby .

A kick-ass song to jump start the crowd...not overplayed...a hit back in the day but obscure enough to be a cool opener.

Jagger did a great version of this on one of his solo tours, I was impressed with how good it was live. I hope it at least makes the set!

It wasn't a tour - it was a one-off performance in NYC in '93 at Webster Hall. yeah, that version was terrific. I also think it would be a highly welcome addition to the setlist - but wouldn't expect it to open - it needs horns and the Stones don't open with the horns.

I vote for "Thunderstruck"!!!! Oh sorry, wrong band. Alright, how about (i) an explosion; (ii) cheers; (iii) a Chuck Berry intro; and (iv) IORR?

Good point, T&A. The song definitely needs horns which would probably eliminate it from the opening slot. It would be a cool addition to the set, however, a hit...but not a war horse!

I remember now... that Webster Hall show was great! Jagger was promoting his best solo album and delivered a pretty hot set! Great boot of that one!

Now...for the opening song...hmmmmm

The Last Time?

Maybe not, but I sure hope it's in the set.

Opener need not be fast - Under My Thumb was v. effective in '81/82.

If it's a warhorse then I hope it's BS - because so fed up of it being in the last 3/4 numbers.

btw what did they open with in '78?

As Tears Go By

The Stones just love to try new and different things. This will be the dark horse.

Country Honk stated: "The opener must be a faster song that kicks ass and get people in the right mood right"

Such as Honky Tonk Women or Not Fade Away? Yeah, those were sure fast.

Mick prefers a slow song to open. Read the 12/95 interview with Rolling Stone.
