This is the first time I've ever heard them referred to by that term.
(I didn't even notice that refernce on Ya-Yas.)

am i crazy or is that not what chip monk says on ya-ya's when he introduces them?
at the very end of the introduction sequence ( i think 4-5 different recordings of his introductions are used in stereo ping-pong) on the right channel he says "they've been called the fantastic five, the greatest rock and roll band in the world, the rolling stones"
you guys are making me wonder if i've been hearing it wrong.

I think it was Sam Cutler who gave the intoduction but I had always thought he said "we hope you have a fantastic time" but after playing it again and paying a bit more attention I think you are correct.

<<the answer to the mystery as to why they hired a new guitarist when brian left>>
There's a mystery?
They've always been a two-guitar band. No mystery there.

was this just promo talk, or had anyone actually called the stones the "fantastic five" prior to the 69 tour?
The closest I recall the Stones ever being introduced as the Fantastic Five was when Long John Baldry introduced them in 1966 on the U..K. tour as "The Fantastic ROLLING STONES" As heard on the 1966 L.P. "Got Live If You Want It" Hey!..The Rolling Stones were at the time 5 guys so maybe you could interchange the two... Rolling Stones = 5 ???
On another note, Sam Cutler's intro on Ya Ya's, Sam told me he did not know that his introduction was going to be used on the L.P. No one asked him if they could use it. He also did not receive one dime (or pound) from the sales of this record. While I am sure everyone else that had 'anything' to do with the L.P. being released or played on it got paid.

Seems a bit much for the Stones to pay him more than they were or had already just for including his introduction....It's not like it was an important performance, imo, but perhaps they could have asked his permission. They didn't pay the fan who shouted "Paint It Black, you devils!" and I think Taylor might be having issues with payment too.

I don't know if you're crazy, but you've certainly misheard, if you believe that the introduction makes reference to a 'fantastic five'.
It unequivocally states: 'People, have a fantastic time...'
I presume you know this. An amusing fantasy, though; the Stones referred to as the 'fantastic five'.
