It is a pretty accurate take on the music scene in the early 70's.
Take it from someone who lived thru the era in New York City.

Several other people did that too :E
"Pretty accurate" as in all those record-company owners murdering people ...
The second episode is better, though

I just now read this - pretty similar to my own reaction

the Otis Redding scenes were lit and framed like moments from Woodstock [parentheses removed]

If that's the case, no wonder people are vexed by the whole thing.

I thought the effect was more Monterey Pop

Yeah, I guess it can appear to be a bit self-indulgent, but I found it to be wonderful in recreating the historical moment and the incandescent heat and colour saturation of various periods.

They did it again with the 2nd episode both with the credits which literally get you right down into the groove of vinyl media and later in the show with an Andy Warhol show for the Velvet Underground as some of Warhol's portrait films (as well as a brief clip from Sleep). I think it's smart and really appropriate if they do it in small doses, as we're (well, most people are) really so far removed from thinking too much about the medium itself and the role it plays in affecting how we engage with the content.

2nd episode was much better, verging on great. It really looks like it could be a show worth watching.

Edit: the opening credits are somethin

On the internet nobody knows
you're Mick Jagger

Last thing I'd want to do is upset your digestion. Perhaps you can let us/ me know a film maker or two that you like? (no pressure, just curious).

Just watched the 2nd Episode, ok, but yes, too much R&D stories, well I suppose it's a trick to revisit the past too, like that Warhol episode.

Anyone know how often they'll be releasing soundtracks? Apparently they planned on doing it regularly.

EDIT - ok, that's weekly : [www.billboard.com]

The song "Rotten apples" played by the Nasty Bits is a James and Mick Jagger's composition; I read that info in the Billboard article and I thought that the Jagger's father&son team as songwriters was a cool try.
Rock and roll,

And it's good indeed!! I loved it!

Btw, the second episode turned out much better than the first. It looks like the story is starting to build...

I think it's really, really good (so far) but in one scene in the pilot I thought I was watching "Goodfellas".

I had been looking forward to this HBO show for a long time but recent trailers looked suspiciously hokey. Last night's pilot confirms that with a older inappropriate cast members trying to look cool. Music/Rock n Roll is an animal that can't be captured on film not like this...at least on a fiction project.

If you wanted to see the evolution of music/rock and roll, blues, grunge, jazz and so on, you might want to pick up a copy of David Grohl / Foo Fighters Sonic Highways. This series is an incredible lesson and experience in music. I am still adding cds to my collection based on all the mentioned artist highlighted on this HBO project.

Don't get me wrong. I am a Martin Scoresse film fan and Mick...what can I say? !!! My love of the Stones is why I check in every day to this website. Maybe David Chase could have given this project more of a Sopranos contemporary feel. I also know this was not intended to be a music documentary but if the series was done right it would be...right?

So in closing, maybe episode two might be better but I am counting the days when I will see the band again.

You can't always get what you want!

Ugh. Dave Grohl. It always ends up being about him somehow. Like in that documentary he did about Sound City you think he's going to ride to the rescue and bail out the studio. Instead he dismantles the gear and takes it home so he can jam with his friends! Dave needs to take a couple of years off. He is overexposed.

Not much seemed to happen in episode 3, huh.
Showcasing the Alice Cooper impersonator seemed to be the main point.

I like the show. It has that Scorsese gangster vibe mixed with 1970s rock folklore. I see it mostly as entertainment mixed with some facts. I think they've done a pretty good job capturing the Rock And Roll generation and what it was like in the 70s, again slightly distorted for entertainment value.

Still waiting for this series to fully grab me. There are great FU moments like when Richie backed out on the Polygram deal. Richie reminds me 100% of my first boss, I miss those days!! The Jamie Vine character is hot hot smiley

I thought they did? And they make spotify playlists for every episode...

Wish there were more than 10 parts of this series... hopefully they've gotten going on writing season 2 already

Enjoying the show, but I wish I could find Bobby Cannavale charismatic. He just doesn't do it for me, I find I cannot care about what happens to him!

James Jagger is great and to me the club scenes and shots of NY are much better than watching Bobby f**k himself up which gets old after a while and needs better editing I will continue to watch though
