Posted by: Nikkei ()

You heard them a 1000 times but you're all set for another 1000:

Of course even an imaginary setlist couldn't do without Warhorses. Let's try and determine the favorite Warhorses of the IORR.org crowd.

Considered Warhorses are:

Brown Sugar
Gimme Shelter
Honky Tonk Women
It's Only Rock'n'Roll
Jumpin' Jack Flash
Miss You
Satisfaction
Start Me Up
Sympathy For The Devil
Tumbling Dice
You Can't Always Get What You Want

I would not personally consider my favorite "Gimme Shelter" a warhorse as I have only heard it 5 out of the 9 times I have seen them.

Gimme Shelter
Jumpin' Jack Flash
Satisfaction

It's Only Rock n Roll (which I'm OK with but it ask for 3)

oops, I thought I would want to miss.....my bad

geez, I was about to wonder about you dude, glad you cleared that up! I couldn't agree more.

There isn't a song on the list I couldn't do without actually. Picking 3 is impossible the way you have worded the question. Only YCAGWYW holds a bit of inherent excitement for me but I still miss the sweet acoustic guitar on the recorded release.

Don't get me wrong, a Stones show is still great even with all those others but a show without them would be fantastic and a real treat for me assuming they played some decent alternatives.

peace

Please explain how I should have worded the question (not a native speaker so there might be some bullsh*t I'm unaware of) I know this is a tight decision, it's supposed to be.

And there ain't no third for me. The songs that come to mind aren't warhorses. Like Wild Horses. I'd like to hear that endlessly.

I understood the question to mean the three on the list I most want to hear. Is that wrong?

I think this is a great survey. It might reveal that amongst the hardcore, we all still love a few of these songs. And when you add them up, you get 75% of a typical set list.

Not wishing to offend, but I predict Miss You gets the least votes.

That's how it was intended, yes. Just imagine the Stones willing to give up Warhorses, which ones shouldn't they give up?

I wouldn't miss any actually. I've seen and heard them enough. I don't mind hearing them again mind you, but if you were to sub any of those with almost anything else in their catalogue, I'd take it.

I'd even pay to see them do Dirty Work in it's entirety...I'm that up for fresh material on stage!

Who would you want to play the bars of boogie woogie on the outro they included in tribute to stu? Perhaps that's sacred and shouldn't be played.

''Jumping Jack Flash'' and ''Brown Sugar'' are for me the only ''real'' warhorses. Those two songs are the only songs that for me are essential for any RS show. Even If I attend a club gig I want to hear those two songs.

My three choices:

''Satisfaction''
This song was once a wonderful live track in the 60s. They also used it to open their gig at Knebworth in 1976, with great result. The Mick Taylor-era versions are not very memorable.
In 1989 it for the first time felt like a cartoonish trifle. All of that aggressive approach it once was performed with was long gone.
1997/98 saw maybe the best live performances of Satisfaction in history. It was slowed down, with a bluesy spice, and Mick vocals were highly inspired.
Ever since 2002 it has again more or less been that same pointless cartoonish trifle. At this point, I would leave the concert after YCAGWYW if I was in a hurry, without feeling even remotely bad about it.

''Gimme Shelter''
I didn't like the way it was performed in the 70s. But from 1995-2003 it was a GREAT live track. The band played it with a tight but still loose groove, and Lisa could still make it justice.
That loose groove has since slowly disappeared into the past, and Lisa's vocals gets worse for everyday that goes by.
In present condition it's nothing more than a ridiculous Disney-number with horrible shrieks from Mrs Fischer.

''It's Only Rock N Roll''
I used to love this song, I could never get sick of it. Then in 2007 on the b-stage it felt kind of wan. In 2012 it was shocked when hearing it. So slow, boring and repetitive. IORR is a song which needs to be played with passion and fury, it needs a to have a mean groove, otherwise it will sound like a weak Chuck Berry imitation with nonsensical lyrics about nothing.

Tumbling Dice
It's Only Rock'n'Roll
Gimme Shelter

This may sound a bit odd, but my favourite Tumbling Dice isn't EOMS, Brussels, LA Friday, Love You Live, 1978 Texas, 1981 Hampton, 1982 Leeds, but rather that version on Rarities, which starts off acoustic, and then becomes a full-blown rocker. It just feels loose, good, and puts a smile on my face.

It's the "wouldn't want to miss" part that kind of throws me off.

Perhaps asking, "Which three warhorses would be acceptable to keep in the set" would be easier to answer. We know they are not going to give them all up and three instead of eleven seems a great idea one I could get behind with some enthusiasm. smoking smiley

I would answer that reworded question as follows:

YCAGWYW
SFD
Brown Sugar

peace

Same for me, I wouldn't care if all of these weren't played. However Midnight Rambler is a song I wouldn't want to miss at a show.

Haha, sorry Nikkei, I read your thread title wrong. At least I mentioned two songs I wouldn't wanna miss. The third one would be Start Me Up.
