Books about Stones
Posted by: Poetry ()

Ok, one more help guide:

I am looking for a few books about Stones - concentrated on the live shows and songs - what inspired them, the process of writing, recording, analysing/describing the music - not the sex & drugs things & quarrels between members primarily.
Any advice?

Nothing compares with "Life" by Keith Richards.
A bunch of the Keith-haters on this board will tell that you that it's full of lies and resentment.
But it was one of the very few rock-n-roll autobiographies that is more about music than drugs, women, and money.
You'll enjoy it very much if you want to learn about the Stones music, what influenced them, and what inspired them.

According To The Rolling Stones is a great read. You get the gist of several lengthy interviews (around '02) with all four of them.
I don't know of any other book that has Charlie coming out of his shell that much. Plus it contains several essays from other notable musicians and their take on the Stones.

That is the big red coffee table one right? Been meaning to pick it up from the second hand bookstore for a while...

Exactly. You should go get it! Another fun firsthand tale is Bills Rolling with the Stones with extensive background information about every record and Tour. Bill also shows off lots of his memorabilia.
It was my first go-to encylopedia on anything Stones and is a much more satisfying experience than I had with Stone Alone his first book effort. Obviously I don't refer to a Kindle edition here cool smiley

Good pick, Nikkei thumbs up

There's also a regular paperback version, alieb.

Thanks, guys. Anyone knows this one?

Just dry facts or also info on background of the songs / gigs?

Martin Elliot's book is about recordings, not gigs, and while it's interesting I don't recall it being heavy on background stuff.
While you're looking for books, I strongly recommend this site: [www.timeisonourside.com] ,
especially the "Track Talk" section under the "database" heading
and the essays in "Can You Hear the Music" under the "themes" heading

Yeah that's a goodun ... track by track stuff ...
Not crazy on the lay-out of it all wish it was it

M. Elliotts book is a good one.

Other books about Stones' albums/ songs and tours- besides those already mentioned by Nikkei: Its only RocknRoll by Steve Appleford (the songs),
The Complete Rec. Guide by J. Karnbach,
Just tours: A life on the Road by D. Loewenstein,
and the very nice books from O. Boehme/ G. Coordes: Fruit of the Loom, a Bigger Bang . .

Plus some smaller ones like:
Complete Discography by Alan Clayson,
Rough Guide by Sean Egan
and Complete Guide to the Music by James Hector

And there are books about special albums - Beggars, Let it bleed, Exile (and now the new S.Fingers) as well.

Quite - especially since Poetry said s/he's looking for books about the music.
Cousin C's list seems good for the stated aims.

Rolling With The Stones?

If I wrote what I really thought of Mr Giuliano, BV would have to turf me off IORR for foul and abusive language. At the very bottom of any list of suggestions from me!

I'll add:

You Can't Always Get What You Want : Sam Cutler.
Under Their Thumb : Bill German

Perhaps one day when iorr is quiet and The Rolling Stones are not touring and releasing lots and lots of product I'll post my list of 170 Stones books that I have catalogued. eye popping smiley

...both GREAT reads! thumbs up

EDIT: in view of with sssoul's comment, smoking smiley I might add that especially Bill Janovitz' book is "concentrated on the [...] songs - what inspired them, the process of writing, recording, analysing/describing the music", and is therefore not only an excellent read but ALSO a must-have for you, Poetry! winking smiley Highly recommended.

P.S.: you might know Bill Janovitz as frontman of the 90's band Dinnosaur Jr. -
As both a genuine Stones fan ànd a talented & experienced musician, he is very well placed to focus on what you're looking for...
And he makes an excellent, personal selection of 50 tracks, imo!

Well hell, if we're just going to list our favourite books without any regard for what Poetry asked for ...
Nankering with the Stones (James Phelge)
The True Adventures of the Rolling Stones (Stanley Booth)
On the Road with the Rolling Stones (Chet Flippo)
Stoned (Andrew Loog Oldham)
but those are all "band history" type books, not focussed tightly on the music per se as requested.

I'd guess Dr Freddie meant Ronnie's (second) autobiography, entitled Ronnie
and published (at least in some regions) by Macmillan

Bill Janovitz also devotes a nice little book called 33 1/3 to Exile on Main Street.

thumbs up

There's another book on the 33 1/3 collection about Some Girls, written by Cyrus R.K. Patell. I haven't read it, and the reviews I've read on Amazon are not good at all, especially with the editing.

Let It Bleed - Sean Egan

Edit: Sorry missed the live shows part.

The only one you need to read is STP by Greenfield. A classic account of the Stones 72 tour. Widely regarded as one of the best rock books ever.

Only if you take it too seriously. Otherwise there is a good amount of laughs it it too. A book written by a drug dealer is bound to be a bit subjective and prone to distorted reality. But I will admit it's a page turner. smoking smiley

In any case, probably exactly the kind of book Poetry is trying to avoid.

Also - I quite like the earlier books by Philip Norman and A E Hotchner. They have interviews with people who are now dead.

Bliss, maybe it's because it's early here, but that made me laugh. Are interview with people who are now dead better than interview with people who are still alive?

Hi, yes, I felt the early interviews were better because the memories were fresher, not going back 40+ years. And once people are gone, obviously they are no longer available for interviews smiling smiley

That made me laugh too. Definitely a step up from all those books
featuring interviews with people who were dead at the time! :E
