Brian Jones did not write many songs. He is creditied with Rice Krispies commercial. He also has a credit for a song titled "Sure I Do" recorded by the Rolling Stones. Registered BTW with Posner Music publishing. I was told by Keith in the 70's and again in the 80's that Brian did work with him on Ruby Tuesday. There are some Nanker Phelge credits where Brian had more to do with the song then the rest. We have "A degree of Murder" sound track, I haven't found out which songs yet are Brians that got registered. Brian's solo material consit of songs "Has anybody Seen By Baby" (not the Stones song) "Chow Time" "Have a Cup of Tea" and a blues instrumental with lot's of keyboards. He also did some producing with "The Bombay Sisters" in 1968/1969. We also have the poem he wrote that Carla Olsen turned into a song titled "Thank You For Being There" I had a studio tape box that had writting on it "The Last Time" B.J. vocals, It was a Studio outtake of "The Last Time" from Jan 65 where the song started with a Tambourine opening. It was a different take but it only had Jones's vocals in the back ground, Jagger with different vocals up front. I was always wondering if Brian had something to do with the song "Miss Amanda Jones". The song was written about Brians "friend/girlfriend" back then Amanda Lear. She is a singer and had released a couple promo videos years ago. Brian was rumored to be behind some of the Stones classic songs, but until I find more facts to back them I will leave that out for now.

So to summarize, he played, wrote, arranged and produced music, possibly some lyrics.

Not too bad.

I'm only joking smiling smiley You sure have the same excellent Brian era-knowledge and the same way with words (including some of the same hyphenation of words) as our royal friend.

So if I'm wrong, I apologise for all the trouble, he he...

The Brian era is my first love, then Taylor era, then Wood era.

Not surprising. For me it varies. For the moment, the Brian era is what interests me the most. I listened too much to the Taylor era in my youth, learned every lick they played and gradually got a bit bored by it (I know I'm swearing in Stones's church right now). I'm getting good drops back now and again, though smiling smiley

The Brian era was the most creative, the time when they were evolving in leaps and bounds with each passing year.

But these days it is the Taylor era that I return to most.

I love Ronnie Wood but it would be hard to deny that the Stones' finest work came before he arrived.

I love each era equally, but probably not so fond of 'Chuck Leavell era'...

That is neither Ron Wood's fault nor Mick Taylor's doing.

All bands do their best work in their first few years or they do nothing of substance at all.

The albums Let It Bleed and Sticky Fingers were as good as they were because the vision and songwriting of the Jagger/Richards collective had matured and come into its own. Even with Taylor aboard, things began to stall--many here on IORR don't care for that last Taylor album.

So, the brilliance of the so-called "Mick Taylor era" has quite a lot to do with the timing of his departure. As talented an instrumentalist as he is, his chops would not have greatly affected the less than stellar results or reception of the Black and Blue album, and frankly I would dare say that he would have found himself lost and "out of his element" in the post-punk Some Girls era Stones.

Mick Taylor was right for the band in the era in which he played, but Ron Wood has been the right man for the job since, because he is more a "Rolling Stone", given that right from the beginning, meaning 1963 or so when he first saw them, he always wanted to be in the band, and unlike Taylor, never wanted to be elsewhere.

The Stones didn't nor did The Beatles or The Who. Depends how you define first few years. First decade perhaps?

<<Depends how you define first few years. First decade perhaps?>>

Well, yes, of course. I was going to type "the first 10" but just typed "few" instead, meaning a decade--which is just a few years in the context of careers that have spanned more than a half century.

So, yes, the Stones, Beatles, Who, Kinks, everyone you can name, all did their best work in their first decade and their concert set lists reflect this to this day.
