I love Bob Dylan......I've seen him a dozen times in concert, but his set in 85 was pure embarassing....I'm sure that was a factor.

He's also in the middle of a tour at the minute which would also be a factor, but yeah Live Aid was a low point!

Springsteen has just finished his solo European tour a couple of days ago. he was asked to play but turned it down. A few others obviously did too.

Michael Jackson WANTED to play the Philadelphia show but the organisers didnt want him to.

Russell Simmons was the producer for the Philly gig and he hoped Michael Jackson would say yes. But he didn't.

Simmons wanted to close the concert with a Prince/Jackson duet (We Are The World). But the artists were not available.

First Jackson wanted to play (before his acquital), but after that nobody heard from him (except that he is in Bahrain right now... and even that is a rumour).

"June 30th: Hip-hop impresario Russell Simmons, a co-producer of Saturday's Live 8 concert in Philadelphia, is still holding out hopes of getting Michael Jackson to perform at the show."

Bon Jovi was there in Philly.
Simmions really thought a Prince/Jackson duet was possible?
Mick Taylor will re-join the Stones as a member before that would ever happen.
I think Simmons produced the worst concert. Bad choice to produce.
That may be why more names weren't there. He was asking the wrong bands.

Plant/Page
Bowie (although he may still have some health issues)
Phil Collins(he actually played on 2 continents back in '85)
Springsteen
Tina Turner
Clapton
Dylan
Mick, Keith and Ronnie (Oh, Mick and Keith were busy feuding in '85)

I hope we don't have another one of these in 20 years.

In 20 years most of the older performers will either be gone or past the point of performing. And I dread the day when I see washed up versions of today's younger generations performing. God they're bad enough now.

And they will all be lip synching too

Bands missing : Aerosmith, ACDC, Springsteen, Lenny Kravitz as mentioned before
Metallica, Oasis, Iron Maiden, even the Scorpions and their bloody ballads could've been part of it.

A bit of reggae could've been cool, like Jimmy Cliff, Toots, Burning Spear.
