Greatest "Should Have Been Released WORLDWIDE (but wasn't)" Stones' Single
Posted by: stonesstein ()

I hope I am not repeating a prior thread...

This is for that single track that you just KNEW would have been a worldwide SMASH had they released it everywhere!

I start by offering a track that I routinely believe is their finest hour. Why it was only released as a single in a handful of countries is beyond me, as the lead track from the LP does not top it.

Drumroll, Charlie...............

He means that it should have been released as an A-side, like Brown Sugar and Wild Horses.

Could have been a single in 1975. Instead ABKCO (rightly so, imo) chose I Don't Know Why/Try A Little Harder.

I always wondered why 'Already over Me' was never released as a single. Not that it is a brilliant track, but it always sounded as a hit to me.

OK, in a rare moment I was being dead serious.

Can you imagine if they led with SSMC and not SOL?

Maybe they bury SOL as an album track, or in the great tradition of Tattoo You, Steel Wheels and Voodoo Lounge have it as the follow-up single?

It's a bit of an 'anthem' even though quite low brow lyrically. I could see it played at NFL and NHL games.

Jiving Sister Fanny..Was suppose to be the next single on ABKCO after Honky Tonk Women but the Stones submitted @#$%& Blues instead to fulfill their contract with ABKCO.
I believe Brown Sugar was a settlement some how, between The Stones & ABKCO,over the C.S.B deal. which is why I believe Brown Sugar was released by both ABKCO & The Stones. ABKCO had the original tape of Brown Sugar from Muscle Shoals Studios (without Bobby Keys sax solo but with the guitar solo). That's why the early pressing of Hot Rocks had the altenate take of B.S. Jagger wanted the Keys version released and flew to NY to give ABKCO that version to use in new pressings of Hot Rocks, OH! Ditto for Horses I would assume.

Could come up with an interesting comp just of songs that should've been singles:

Sympathy For The Devil
Gimme Shelter
Jigsaw Puzzle
Sway
Monkey Man
Rocks Off
If You Can't Rock Me
Under My Thumb
Dead Flowers
Time Waits For No One
All Down The Line
Tie You Up (The Pain Of Love)
You Don't Have To Mean It
She Saw Me Coming

Yeah, one of the better songs on STEEL WHEELS. I've always liked that one and bizarrely somehow Blinded By Love.

Steel Wheels should've been an E.P. of Mixed Emotions c/w Continental Drift, & Slipping Away. All else is the single weakest LP of the band's catalog.
