Great list and I completely agree with the choices above. Mick Jagger's always been my favorite "singer", but I never thought of him as a "singer", he's so much more. Unfortunately over the last decade, Mick's changed his style to become a "singer" and it's been sometimes painful to me. Superheavy has some great songs on it, but Mick's "singing" often just kills it. Same with the Alfie soundtrack (some great songs mixed with cringeworthy singing) and I feel lots of Bigger Bang as well. My request, Mick stop "singing" and lower your voice in the mix and make it just part of the Stones sound again like the great examples above. Winter, I Don't Know Why - great choices. Tumbling Dice - I've heard the song 10,000 times and still don't know all the lyrics, because the vocals are such a part of the mix. That's the way I like it.

I agree 100%. Still I would add YCAGWYW of the same show (and the other version from the afternoon or evening show on the same day respectively.)

Nope, no dropping Winter, liddas. Ya can't do that. Besides, the only correct lists have Let It Loose and Winter in them. Any lists without both songs are the result of shoddy research or someone not hearing the question correctly.

But you're right; you should add Let It Loose to your list. And bonus points to Matxil and you for recognizing Melody's wonderful phrasing, melodic swing and the playful vocal passages at the end.

In a way, itt's more barking than singing, but I think in this case it actually *is* also a vocal performance since he doesn't overdo it (as he would do later when trying to imitate punk-rockers) and really uses his voice to optimal effect.

There is a difference between Closing Time and That Feel, just to put things in perspective

Like I said, I think Mick gives a great performance. But I think he overdoes it just as much as he did in 1975/76. In 1978, he was actually singing more. Even more so in 1981/82 etc.

I was about to say Midnight Rambler. What we have here is Mick in character. Mick is such a great singer that he is perfectly capable of:

1. Adopting the classic late 60s/70s 'in character' Mick American drawl persona
2. Singing in a straight English style a la Lady Jane, Ruby Tuesday, New Faces
3. The Miss You/Emotional Rescue/Worried About You falcetto
4. That clipped vocal that he started using, particularly on his solo albums
5. Probably a few others that I can't think of right now

But when he is in that much imitated 'in character' voice and he's on top of his game, as on the album version of Midnight Rambler, than I think he's pretty hard to beat.

I don't disagree at all, Mike. I really love MR. In character indeed.

But the problem in 73-76 was perhaps that he increasingly remained in character. You know "too much of a good thing"

In 73 he was definitely in character all the way. It was, more or less, pt 2 of the 72 North American tour after all. Perhaps the greatest rock'n'roll tour of them all and who wouldn't have wanted him to be utterly Mick?

In 75 when they really started the stadium and larger arenas phase of their career he concentrated more on his stagecraft which included running from side to side. This left him needing to be more conserving of his voice - to avoid being out of breath as he ran - so for me, I didn't get enough of the old 'in character' Jagger voice.

If You Can't Rock/Get Off Of My Cloud is a good example of that more shouty style.

Good point Dandy. Last song of the set so naturally he's panting a bit at this point. But generally he's still got the 72 tour voice on the 73 European tour. Perfect bridge and pointer to 1975 though. The shape of things to come.

There sure is lots of examples of Mick's shout singing in the 1975 Madison Square Garden show. Lots of him not singing at all too. Sounds like he was having throat problems that night but one of the worst ever vocal nights by Mick, imo. peace

It sounds trite or predictable to even suggest this, but I think the studio version of Satisfaction is a great Mick vocal performance.

His best live singing in the last 40 years was on That's How Strong My Love Is on the Licks tour. Perhaps not purely based on the purity of his voice but the complete performance which brought tears to this fan's eyes, quite literally. Jagger was transformed, teleported, back to 1965 - to a mere 22-year-old lad about to really set forth on becoming the greatest rock star and fronting the greatest rock'n'roll band the world has ever, and will ever, see. Amen.
