Another great musician taken from us. Joe Cocker made one of THE best songs of the early rock era. In fact, no, I don't think many singers have ever surpassed such a great single and vocal performance. But there were so many more - Delta Lady, The Letter, Unchain My Heart, N'Oubliez Jamais, First We Take Manhattan - all stunners.

This brings it all into focus...

RIP Joe Cocker.

What a loss to the world of music. One of the great voices of rock. A number of his songs are in my mp3 mix. Some of my faves as a way of paying tribute.

My top Cocker song:

Damn. Sad for this loss. Who could ever replace that fine fellow in this world?

A great story about Joe:

Him and his band were touring Canada way back in 1976. I was just a young kid working on the family farm in Southern Alberta and we heard there was this rock band going to perform a free concert for the locals. The community was tiny, maybe 800 people total in the two or three towns right on the Montana/Canada border.

Sure enough Joe and his band set up in a farmers field and played for hours. Really freaked out the conservative farm folks with his stage antics but us kids thought it was awesome. People talked about it for years. They gave out free t-shirts, and I wore mine for years ....something about The Declaration of Joe Cocker looking like a John Hancock signature from The Constitution.

Looking back on the affair, I'm guessing they had ulterior motives for stopping in this place and staying for 3 days. It was after all the last stop before an international border crossing and the band and crew likely had some substances they decided to stay and consume rather than throw away or risk problems with the always suspicious border police.

It was a grand affair in the end, sure made a huge impression on this kid and I'm thankful they stopped and rocked that wheat field. RIP Joe

peace

That's some fine peace of writing...

Until we meet again Joe!

I am sorry I can't translate it in good English .....

Nos "héros" musiciens s'en vont les uns après les autres ;
it must sound stupid ,i know , but I don't want to think of an end -there's plenty of time - of the Stones members

After Bobby and Mac I was wondering when and who the 3rd one would be as these things tend to run in 3's. Joe has sadly filled in the blank. A really great talent and he was supposed to be a very down to earth genuine guy. We all have to remember that this generation of musicians led very full and physically stressful lives that probably left their bodies weakened through the rigorous travel and tour schedules they followed. Never mind the lifestyle choices. Their numbers are being called, and to a degree our own mortality should be questioned for those of us who lived large in those times. We should again take note that 'it's a short stay on the planet'. Appeciate what we have and take each day as an adventure.

Thanks for the memories and RIP Joe.

I always loved his raspy voice. The only opportunity I had to see him was when he opened for a reunited Guess Who back on September 7, 2001 in Buffalo.

I made my younger brother come along with me but he was not a big Joe Cocker fan. As we were about to settle in to our seats we were chatting with a usher friend of mine and Joe was performing his set. Joe was dressed in all back just standing at the mic singing and I remember clearly as he started to hit those high notes I looked over and my brother was suddenly very interested in the show and I whispered to him, "He can still hit those high notes with ease." Without turning his head he replied "He sure the hell can, he sounds good." He was singing his ass off the entire show. Then the Guess Who tore up their set, but Joe stole the show. Still one of the best sounding shows I've seen. We still talk about that.

Thanks for the memories Joe.

That's around the first time I saw him too - opening for the Guess Who in Montreal. By the time he finished his set I'd more than had my money's worth and could have gone home very happy. Was able to see him twice more after that as the headliner. Always hoped there would be one more show. Such a great loss.

Jesus H BLoody Christ

God....we've had enough....again

Let it rest. If you MUST, take our musical heroes in a more orderly fashion. This has been just one after the other. I am tired of it

Joe Cocker. A great. A BLOODY GREAT. That voice. Those mannerisms. The one, the ONLY, Joe Cocker. Gone. Never to be forgotten

RIP Joe and sincere best wishes and condolences to his family and friends.

He'll get by....with a little help from his friends

Wow, only four non cover songs and yet, all his great cover hits sound like they are his. He truly put his mark on those covers and made them his own. What a tremendous voice!

Cheers,

Joe Cocker was one of those singers who could take a good song and turn it into a brilliant one.
His music will live on for ever.

Just as long as the guitar plays, let it steal your heart away
