Status Quo and Phil Collins were high profile acts in 85.
What happened there?
Would like to see better bands in Philly, but nothing can save that line-up

Pink Floyd is doing pretty much what I expected. I was thinking 'Money' would be played.

I honestly thought that of all the songs that were a dead cert to be played on Saturday by anyone, "Money" would be the obvious one!

wawijr why do say that nothing can save the lineup in Philly? Is it bad?

Status Quo had another gig, and said that they had to open Live8 to reach the other concert. There's even a campaign going on for Status to open...

I'd love for Status to open - and I think that they would too. They're not quite as big now as they were then.

Anyone who wants to bash the Quo, go and listen to Dog of Two Head and then come back to talk about it...

I'd love to bash them, but I cant be bothered. Like their music, it would just sound the same as its always been

They were playing second on the bill to Meatloaf last week at an outdoor show in Belfast, on a "triple bill" that also featured Ugly Spice (Mel C). I'm glad I avoided it.

Very big in the 70's and 80's in the UK of course, but hardly worthy of an opening slot at Live 8 in 2005

this is the line-up

Will Smith
Bon Jovi
Dave Matthews Band
Destiny's Child
Jay-Z
Kaiser Chiefs
Keith Urban
Linkin Park
Maroon 5
P Diddy
Rob Thomas
Sarah McLachlan
Stevie Wonder

Sure it would be fun and all....
but i would rather see London

with the exception of Stevie Wonder and the exclusively visual pleasure of checking out the lovely goddess Beyonce and her pals, theres not one of those artists I'd cross the street to see (I've heard Sarah McLachlan is good by people whose taste I would consider spot-on, but havent heard her records so cant judge)

In some cases, there are artists I'd actually pay money to in order for them to stay at home (if we all agree to treble a pledge to famine relief, do you think they'd drop Bon Jovi from the bill? Its bad enough seeing images of starving people without having to listen to the Singing Poodle as well)

thats a horrendous line up for such a big event. Thank Christ its on late over here and I can either watch porn or go to bed instead.

U2 and Macca in Beatles costumes

When Paul McCartney and U2 take the stage in Hyde Park on Saturday (July 2, 2005) to open the Live 8 concert in London, they'll do so in Beatles costumes. As reported in Italy's La Repubblica and quoted in England's Sunday Times, the musicians will perform the Beatles song "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band" while wearing Sgt. Pepper costumes, as the Beatles did on the cover of the Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band album in 1967. The first line from the song - "It was 20 years ago today" - will also reference the fact that it's been 20 years since the Live Aid concerts in London and Philadelphia, at which U2 and McCartney both performed.

The newspapers also reported that McCartney will close the London show, as expected. He'll lead an all-star version of the Beatles song "The Long And Winding Road," which will symbolize Live 8 organizer Bob Geldof's call for people to march on Scotland for "The Long Walk To Justice." Geldof wants as many people as possible to go to Scotland, where the leaders of the G8 nations will be holding a summit, to demonstrate how important relieving Third World poverty is to ordinary citizens.

Macca is still living in the past - what has "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band" to do with the poverty in Africa..... he should rather donate some of his huge fortune to the poor ones..... Macca will use the show to promote himself and his business.......

reason for the choice of song is found in its opening line - with the obvious link to it being the 20th anniversary of Live Aid

..and how do you or any of us know what money anyone 'donates'? If people came out and declared the amount they gave, most people would accuse of them of self- promotion anyway.

Maybe he'll change the lyrics to "Sgt. Geldoffs Lonely Hearts Club Band".

Just found this over on the shidoobee board.

"McCartney will open the gig with an adapted version of SERGEANT PEPPER'S LONELY HEARTS CLUB BAND
- reworded to praise Geldof's achievements"

I can't believe it, I was being totally tongue-in-cheek and sarcastic!
Lol...thats ridiculous, it will come off as totally lame I think.

"It was 20 years ago today,
Sgt. Geldoff told the band to play"!

'it was 20 years ago today
Sir Bob told us all to "fokkin' pay!"

I'm a bit surprised that the current version of Queen wasn't asked to perform. By far the best performance from 85.

If Floyd actually survive the gig without fighting,I think we could be looking at the biggest ever comeback .

I understand they're doing a satellite link from Lisbon (where they're playing on Saturday).

You might have to scrape me off the floor at the end of the tour, but it'll be really good scrapings. - Mick Jagger

Unfortunately Freddy Mercury is not with us anymore. He was a major part of the great Queen performance last time around at Live Aid.

The concert is to raise awareness of third world debt and try to pressurise the richer countries to do something about it. It is achieving that objective already. Now it's on with the show, who cares if the songs carry any political message? I don't. I'm going and looking forward to a good pop/rock concert, not looking for singers like Bono garbling on about whatever and looking for a sainthood. The performers (like McCartney) don't have enough spare cash to ease third world debt, even their large bank accounts couldn't sort that mess out. What they can do is use their status as superstars / celebrities to help promote the cause. Also, I think McCartney is one of the performers on the bill who doesn't need any promotion.

I think I've bust a button on my trousers....

Hi Bjornulf,

I think Freddie was THE reason Queen was the best that day. I'll never forget watching the crowd clapping in unison to Radio Ga Ga and the finale We Are The Champions.
