Agreed! I love "If You Really Want to Be My Friend." I always thought of it as the Stones' tribute to the Philly Soul sound.
Blue Magic, who provide the background vocals, are beautiful. This group (Blue Magic) had a top-ten hit in the summer of 1974, a few months before "It's Only Rock 'n Roll" came out. The song was called "Sideshow":

Here's info about the Philly Soul sound (in 1975 Elton John had is own tribute to Philly Soul - "Philadelphia Freedom"):

Yes. It's also got a slightly countryish sound to it, but the back up chorus, and MT's guitar solo are fantastic. It's a great song, a very underrated gem. This is 'proper' love song, with no underlying sneer or cynicism.
I love those riffs going through the whole song, but I don't know what it is: organ? guitar with an effect?
anybody know?

I don't know. Why don't they play Casino Boogie and a million other songs better than IYRWTBMF?

pretty sure that is a leslie on the guitar; like on LIL.
I have always loved IYRWTBMF, and never understood why it wasn't one of our big cult favorites. The lead vocal by Jagger is a top performance. And I love how it is a proper 'chord' song; not a riff per se. But more than anything I love, musically, when it slides into the bridge (twice) "people tell me you were a vulture..." and then into "but you got a little charm around you". I just love that part.
I read that the BU vox by Blue Magic was actually o/d very late in the game.
