"Restless Farewell" - Bob Dylan - Live
(Frank Sinatra's 80th Birthday Tribute: 1995)

Found this recently; duly stunned at the tenderness and intensity of this song, and this performance.
For me this was a stunning find I was eager to share.

Yeah it was one of the jewels in the "Genuine Bootleg Series" Cds.. thumbs up

o/t Bob Dylan 'Trouble No More" film

Just finished watching the film 'Trouble No More" from DYlans latest box set of the same name..his Gospel period. All I can say is.. what a band ! He surrounded himself with some outstanding musicians, and the backing singers ( the "choir" ) were incredible. I would have loved to see a show during this time, but this is the next best thing. On some of the performances, like the song 'Solid Rock" they sound like the Allman Bros at their peak. Looking back now, this period in Dylans career was top shelf. He got slagged so hard during those times, but this has held up so well. Kuddos Bob !

I love seeing how the setlists change with each year. Last time he was in my area he was doing Like A Rolling Stone, All Along The Watchtower, Visions Of Johanna, Don't Think Twice Its All Right; before that he was doing A Hard Rain's A Gonna Fall, She Belongs To Me, Simple Twist Of Fate; this time around when I finally saw him he did Desolation Row, It Ain't Me Babe, Tryin' To Get To Heaven. Can't wait to see what he brings out this time. I'd love to be a fly on the wall when he picks a tour setlist.

I'm so happy he kept the bulk of Tempest when performing. Tempest and Modern Times surely must be the two best albums of the 00's. With B&L and ABB as a close 3rd and 4th.

A cheeky bastard that Bob Dylan. He's flogging a book he didn't write and a lecture he didn't hold. No wonder even his name is a fake.

Yeah, I feel he came back with a vengeance in 1997 and continued to make very good albums after that. Love And Theft, Modern Times and Tempest are brilliant. Together Through Life has some strong songs as well.

Elston Gunn - Live in Sheffield, England, 1966
[www.youtube.com]

This is an incredibly brilliant show.
The harmonica work during the solo set is spell-binding and majestic.
as are, obviously, the songs.
incredibly impassioned, 'present' performances....
A real gift to run into this tho I suspect deeper fans already may be covetting this one. Very Top of his game stuff imo. No doubt. :-O Have fun!

0:00 She Belongs To Me
3:50 Fourth Time Around
8:35 Visions Of Johanna
17:08 Its All Over Now Baby Blue
23:08 Desolation Row
34:50 Just Like A Woman
41:50 Mr. Tamborine Man
53:00 Tell Me, Momma
57:05 I Don't Believe You (She Acts Like......
1:03:06 Baby, Let Me Follow You Down
1:08:20 Just Like Tom Thumb's Blues
1:14:16 Leopard-Skin Pill-Box Hat
1:18:50 One Too Many Mornings
1:22:36 Ballad Of A Thin Man
1:30:00 Like A Rolling Stone

Sensitive, plaintive, exposed; meandering harmonica solos that are adventurous.
Is this Bob pretty much just peaking out in all directions at once or something?
Mebbe. Fantastic stuff. Fantastic.

This is trippy and hilarious at points. One can only wonder what other off the wall takeoffs on Dylan are floating around out there. Is there something similar re the Stones where folks slavishly ape the Stones sound and Mick's singing? I'm sure some of y'all know better than me what there is.

For those in UK who haven't watched this great documentary yet, BBC4 will broadcast it on 30 March, at 10pm, followed by "... Sings Dylan II", "a feast of cover versions of Bob Dylan songs from the BBC archives, with classic tracks old and new and some surprises from the 1960s to the present".

Bob Dylan - Trouble No More
Arena

In 1979, Bob Dylan released Slow Train Coming, an album of strictly devotional songs. He declared he had found God in Christianity. For the following two years, accompanied by the finest musicians and gospel singers, he toured with a repertoire solely of songs expressing his new-found faith.

A film was made of one of those performances, but it was never released. After 37 years, it is broadcast for the first time - but with a twist. The performance is enhanced by a series of sermons between the songs, all specially written for the film and preached by Oscar-nominated actor Michael Shannon.

The result is Bob Dylan's gospel service combining the then of the gig with the now of the message of The Preacher.

Agreed. I'm wondering if Bob is moving into a new phase, as only one tune is from the Great American Songbook ?

A precedent was how every tune on the 1979-early 1980 tour was religious. By 1984 only one or two gospel tunes appeared in a more pre 79 orientated set-list.

By 1987, and with the assistance of the Grateful Dead, Dylan returned to some of his deeper cuts, i.e Frankie Lee & Judas Priest.

Looking forward to his eventual return to SoCal in a small theater or amphitheater.
Aside from Desert Trip x 2, the last time I saw him was at the Santa Barbara Bowl with Mavis Staples opening in June, 2016 w/a 3rd row seat- fantastic show on every level.

Basically the same set as November with classics like Don't Think Twice, Simple Twist Of Fate, Make You Feel My Love and Spirit In the Water in for the songbook stuff. And I'm more than happy with that. Songbook stuff was better to see live than I expected, but this is obviously better, which is good cause Bob was sounding so great so the more classics you can take advantage of he should.

I don't say that's entirely new – but now since the cover songs are gone it seems he doesn't leave the piano hardly at all. Bad luck for those people sitting on the wrong side…
