OT: Pink Floyd

Just read that Pink Floyd will be getting back together (entire band...with Waters) for Live 8 in London. While I enjoyed them in High School (early 90s), I don't really care for them now. Still...this is pretty big music news.

Maybe they'll use a WALL as part of the stage set...with Roger Waters alone on one side. :-0

If Waters can get Gilmour off his dead ass maybe they'll tour next summer. Interesting in thaT Waters has been hinting at a reunion when he was the one who wanted to deep-six the Floyd franchise and Gilmour is fat'n'happy in his castle, apparently uninspired to take on a massive tour. Ironic as well that it was Gilmour who wanted to keep Floyd going.

This is great news. Pink Floyd will perform with Roger Waters in the band. WOW!!!
If they would confirm that the Stones are to play I wouldn't hesitate for a sec to purchase a plane ticket to London. Although I hate the fact that you can't purchase tix to this event because of the lousy lottery system they're insisting on using.

I'll bet that this will lead to a full blown reunion album/tour. They'll say that they enjoyed doing the reunion concert and had so much fun that they've decided to go back into studios and do an album.
If this occurs, I'm sure the reunion tour will be absolutely huge. I don't mind Floyd and would probably go and see the show myself.

I would probably see it too...but not for the HUGE ticket prices (Stones esque...hahaha). It would be an intersting show...

I agree...I think a Floyd reunion is going to finally happen...only about 8 years after I stopped listening to them.

I can't imagine how much money Pink Floyd's will make if they tour again, all the records of attendance and gross will go to hell.

A Floyd reunion likely would be the biggest (in dollars) tour ever and could set records not to be touched for a very long time. Granted that would due much to being a reunion. Simply, they are a huge band with tons of fans and have not played together in full for almost 25 years. However, with there being Floyd minus Waters until about 10 years ago, and Waters tours doing well as well, it makes the reunion not a "old farts out for money", but a "THEY'RE BACK" reunion...a HUGE difference.

I really was a PF fan thru Animals (their first albums and singles have an energy & wit, & a garage-like anything goes attitude) but their career post-Wall (which I never liked much) is quintessentially rock-star-lazy - you get the spectacle (does it matter who's onstage?), big chunks of Wall/Dark Side, & (since Roger left in '83) 2 drab studio albums, followed by 2 by-the-numbers live albums - all bloat (does that red flashing light on the spine of the last one still blink?). I heard on the radio Gilmour told Sting (?) at some party he couldn't imagine touring again, he's too old.

Both good points...but you not liking them does not mean they aren't a HUGE act.

I don't think words or gross takings quotes could quite ever explain
how big it would be. They would sell out ever stadium in the world
witihn 5 minutes.

Put it this way - Cohl would drop our boys like hot cakes if he could get
a slice of Pink Floyd.

Basically you have Led Zeppelin or Pink Floyd dwarfing every tour record
ever set - and Led Zep have a member down. Therefore Pink Floyd - can you
imagine the fight for tickets ? Wish it would happen.

Great stuff, its too bad their early stuff is not known as well by many people who call themselves big Floyd fans.

I saw THE WALL tour in c. 1980 - both shows at the L.A. Sports Arena.
Mindbending and incomparable as far as concept and special effects.
I would pay more to see a Pink Floyd reunion (with Roger Waters) than the Stones, and thats saying alot!

In terms of ticket prices, Roger has said anything hes involved in will never charge over 70-80 dollars for tickets, just enough so he can break even. ALso no stadiums if hes in the band.

THIS IS AWESOME. The only major rock band to have all of its members still alive, and they are going to perform together. im looking forward to it.

Hi John R,

I have the double live PULSE CD with the flashing red light. FYI, the inside of the case slides out and it's a AA or AAA battery that needs changing. I've changed mine twice now in 10 years! Newer copies don't have the red light.

<The only major rock band to have all of its members still alive>

That's true, but I don't think Syd Barret will contribute much smiling smiley

Scary with all the die-hard oneĀ“s hhere that would sell their souls to Floyd.
I wont even trade a Stones concert to a Waters+Floyd+Barret(a la 66-67)-concert.
But on the other hand I havent seen a single concert with the Stones yet (nor with Floyd).
Floyd can be so terrible bad. The Wall stinks imho.

the problem is Dave and Roger still hate each other.. depends on how that works out with the rehearsing and doing this gig.. if they can get over that they could tour or they could just put up with each other for as little time as possible do a 30 min set and then never speak again

could go either way but would love to see them back.. trouble is if they came back Roger would want to do his stuff and Dave would want his stuff which was mainly written with others anyway

Best thing yet would be to get Syd in the studio with them and do something but that's never going to happen

Best thing for all must be avoid material from albums after The Final Cut.
Except for the new one if they go in to the studio again.

Mine too. They appear to need changing every four years or so which is a good reminder to listen to the damned thing. As I recall the blinking one was a special edition.

Very true. Ever since Roger Waters quit, I've boycotted everything "pink Floyd" has released. It's all crap without him. My brother in-law saw them live in the 80's without Roger Waters and he was impressed with the live show, but he doesn't know a thing about rock and roll - his opinion is meaningless. And all of the post-Waters recorded output is contrived sounding...like a Pink Floyd wannabe cover band. It makes me sick. Plus the fact that Gilmour insisted on using the name "Pink Floyd" when he isn't even an original member...what a complete ASS. After the Syd era, Pink Floyd is Roger Waters - he wrote damn near everything after that point.

Hope the reunion produces some new material, but I wouldn't count on it.
I think they hate eachother too much to continue beyond this once-in-a-lifetime concert.

Hairball are you serious. First of all Gilmour was with them from the beginning, we was just a session player and not an official member until Syd left the band. Wow...that is a LOT of time on your hands...

I can't remember...but didn't Gilmour teach Syd how to play guitar? I have a book on them I read many moons ago "A Saucerful of Secrets the Pink Floyd Oddysee". To be honest, I have not listened to them since freshman year of college...and that was almost 10 years ago.

Just copied it from a Floyd site. As a big Floyd fan I think Gilmour is more critical to their sound.

Another fact that many people aren't aware of is that Waters is tone deaf.

It's very interesting read the variety of posts, although many of them are quiet negative...For me personally PINK FLOYD is the best act ever, their shows are incomparable and their influence on rock history ist maybe the hugest!

Sea lo que sea, I'm not gonna miss their show if they are gonna tour again!

pd: on contrary to the stones, their solo work is great!

sdstonesguy & JJ Flash, yes I have also read those things about Waters, that book you mentioned is a very interesting read. Its almost as if they had Gilmour ready to be the main guitarist and vocalist, as if they knew Syd was going to lose his marbles. I think Waters is a very talented musician but I love Floyd mainly because of Gilmour and his songs and guitar playing. I like the Wall but to me it is not as good as their earlier stuff.

By the way, sdstonesguy I just got back from San Diego. Was out there visiting a few of my old roomates who moved their after college. Good time..
