Favourite drummers

Apropos of earlier post ”The Greatest Drummer”, who is your favourite drummer (beside Charlie) of all time?
I know it’s hard to compare drummers from for instance the 50’s to today’s.
For me the way BÍLL BRUFORD played drums in the 70´s (King Crimson, Yes, solo-stuff) is no 1.

Your faves?

Keith Moon. Drumming ability often overlooked due to his 'moon the loon' persona.

Santana's drummer in the late 60s/early 70s!

Al Jackson who played on most of Al Green's Hi Records stuff in the 70s, and with Booker T. & the MGs. Along with Steve Cropper and Duck Dunn he was part of the "house" band at Stax records, playing on hits by Rufus Thomas, Otis Redding and others. The guy had an incredible touch and was as good as anyone locking-on to the bass player's groove.

From the 70's John Bonham, and of all time Matt Cameron from Soundgarden, now Pearl Jam. Amazing drummer with encredible technique bit let's the beat prevail. Drums like a good mix of Charlie and Bonham.

But, best ever will always be Charlie as he drummed on the 1975 aqnd 1978 tours.

For me Keith Moon too. He is the only drummer I can think of who people look at instead of the lead singer / guitarist!

I also think Kenny Jones was a good drummer. He wasn't technically brilliant but I love the Small Faces / Faces stuff he did.

Listen to Son of a Baker and I Know I'm Losing You.

I think he lost it when he joined the Who.

Topper Headon (Clash)

and

Stewart Copeland (Police)

Listen to those hi-hats, for example...

I love drummers who can play different beats,
that´s why I think most of the heavy metal/hardrock
drummer are just boring to listen to.

Agree on John Bonham and Stewart Copeland. Phil Rudd is one of my favourites, too.

My favorites would lean towards the hard rock drummers.

Bonham - Zeppelin
Alex VH - Van Halen
Moon - The Who
Paice - Deep Purple
Tommy Aldridge - Ozzy/ Whitesnake- awesome drum solos using his hands
Cozy Powell - Rainbow/ Whitesnake
Neal Peart - Rush
Neal Smith - Alice Cooper
Phil Rudd - AC/DC hard rock version of Charlie Watts!
Bun E. Carlos - Cheap Trick
Joey Kramer - Aerosmith
JC Mellencamp's original drummer, who's name I can't remember right now. He also toured with Smashing Pumpkins and John Fogerty.

Of course, Mr. Watts

never a Moon or Bonham fan. Not into "lead" drums. Drummers should be time-keepers, no more or less. That's why CW rates so high. Nobody does it better in rock'n'roll. I could cite you 20-30 jazz/blues drummers, on the other hand.
