Oh that's never a good thing, especially at her age.

I'll bet she has osteoporosis.

Get well soon MF!

Poor Marianne, she certainly has had a difficult time of it with her health these past few years.

Sending good wishes for a speedy recovery!

As far as I know this is not a big problem even when your in your 90's, nowadays they can walk out of the hospital the next day.......well thats what I heard the other day...

The problem isn't the hip itself but complications stemming from the fall and just being in the hospital itself. Infections can occur, often pneumonia is contracted, and next thing you know, the patient is very ill.

Marianne is still young. She'll be fine. It's like an 80-year old breaking a hip. This was an accident, and hopefully she will recover soon. She beat cancer, she can beat this.

We'll I hope you're right...my understanding is that the bones just don't heal, or take eons to heal. If your forced to be completely sedentary, at that age while it heals, yikes.

Osteoporosis inevitably starts to happen to all women post menopause, but the speed and severity is a genetic lottery. Hormone replacement has gone out of fashion (at least in the UK) because of the increased risk of some cancers, so although you can do a bit with diet and exercise, sooner or later it will get you, and a fall you'd have bounced from in your 20s will break a hip.

Anyway, the prognosis looks good, so get well soon, Marianne.

I think Grease can help with the procedure, and the doc's should be on the look out for a Mars bar. Speedy recovery MF, you will be fine.

Wishing Marianne well. Hip replacements can be quick to recover from - I'm 10 weeks post-op and doing well - but I think if you have to have a fracture mended it can be much more involved. Hopefully she'll be up and about real soon.
