there are different stones recordings on reel to reel.. from the '60s and early 70s...they pop up on ebay...don't know how they sound

I have the same one! These are not consumer decks for listening. These were considered "semi-professional" decks for multi-track recording. It uses both directions of 1/4" tape (two sides of stereo) to record four tracks. You can overdub. This would not have been a deck to listen to pre-recorded albums on, though I think you can use it for that....I am working on moving the recordings I made with my bands in the early 80s from this deck to digital. Fun project!

Do you know if any of the tapes have tracks on them that are not the usual takes/versions/releases?

Exile sold for something like $200.
I've never seen a copy of IORR.
Can anybody confirm that this definitely exists? I thought GHS was the last one released.
It was a deal I really couldn't pass. The seller of the TEAC A-3340S was the original owner and in the last 20 years rarely used it. In addition to the deck, the seller threw in two TEAC AX-10 sound-on-sound echo units, a TEAC AX-20 mixer, a large roll of splice tape, two empty 10.5" metal reels, two 10.5" blank reels, and some other items.
I have read good things about using a modified TEAC A-3340S to play prerecorded reel tapes, especially quadraphonic reels. I own a tube buffer that I hope to modify and use as a preamp for the TEAC A-3340S.
Good luck on your project. The TEAC A-3340S supposedly is an excellent tool for such recordings.
I think you're right, Goats head should be the last one to be released.

I just purchased a reel to reel tape player from a neighbor. I have been planning on buying one for some time. I have read a number of articles from audiophile magazines and websites that claim the best sound one can get at home is via reel tape. The reel tape player I purchased is a four-channel deck. I don't know if the Stones did anything quadraphonic.
Does anyone know of Stones releases on reel tape? Where can one find them for sale (maybe eBay)? Does anyone own any Stones albums on reel? How do they sound?

Reel-to-reel was a consumer high-end format in the 50s and 60s. It was deemed to have better sound than audio. I do not know if any Stones albums were released on reel-to-reel. However, the Stones did record on reel-to-reel tape, first mono, then multi-track (4,8,16,24). Those tapes would not be playable on a consumer reel-to-reel deck. What kind of deck (make, model) did you get?

If you have the right equipment and a clean reel, they sound amazing. Lots of pieces to that puzzle. Remember that tape doesn't deal with the same physical issues as vinyl.. example being that vinyl mastering has to notch certain frequencies to not make the needle jump off the groove. Eq is re applied in playback. Tape is straight, just like the original masters.
I don't collect reel but know several who do.

I used to have a good working reel-to-reel (not as good at the TEAC in this thread though) and although I collected some excellent Beatles reel-to-reel commercial releases I never once saw a Stones' one. Maybe because I was in the UK at the time.
I am though pretty sure that there are unique versions of Stones' recordings on 8-Track. From memory there's something unique about "Some Girls" on 8-Track.
Sadly, although I have some 8-tracks I've not got a working player!

The faster the speed the better the quality, so it's best if you can track down the releases intended to play back at ips with faster speed.
Not sure what speed they usually sre for stones reel to reel album releases, but I think there were atleast 2 speeds for reel to reel releases.
3 3/4 and 7 1/2ips.

Those commercial tapes were made to play on something like this;

I used to own one of these - very nice for off-air taping from TV or radio (the illegal downloading technique of the early 1960s) - but I did own a Beach Boys tape and can vouch for the sound being very pleasant to my teenage ears.
Google for EL3541 and you'll find more.
Edit: This machine used 3 3/4 ips - some of the smaller stuff that came later ran at half the speed and didn't sound half as good.

I guess the tapes will sound even better on the big semiprofessional decks (which may also have survived in better condition than the cheaper mass market machines).

I got all reel to reel except:
- Exile on main street
- Goat head soup
- It's only rock'n'roll
They are really more expensive and hard to find than the others.

Always tough that the quality of tapes (magnetic field) weakens through the years especially if you don't preserve theme the right way....
Don't know the quality of tapes they use back in the 60's early 70's...... iron chrome metal......

Milkyway: I would love to find some of those echo units. Of course, I can use digital echo now, but there's something about those original TEAC ones. We did a lot of bouncing down (to free up tracks) in those days, so we got a Fostex 4-channel Dolby C noise reduction unit. When I started working on these tapes I had to find another Fostex, as some of the tapes were encoded with Dolby C. Are you doing multi-track recording?
