Help with MT's Brown Sugar guitar lick

Hi, mates. I know this can be a tricky question, but...

After trying quite a few times to sort out the descending guitar lick that Mick Taylor plays on the final part of the Brown Sugar 72 versions, I have to admit that I'm not able to catch it. You know, when the lyrics finish, Taylor plays a beautiful descending lick which seems not-so-difficult to play, but as it is not based on a classic blues scale (at least that is what it seems to me) and I'm not a very talented player, I was wondering if any of the guitar players here could "shine a light", as I doubt it would be tabbed anywhere...

Thanks in advance

Hi Bruno. I know what your talking about and it's relatively simple to do but it's a bit hard to describe how he does it. The basic idea is that during the G chord (Yeah,Yeah, Yeah, Yeah Wooooooo!) start with a G7 chord (same shape as D7 at the 2nd fret) at the 7th fret and slide down to the 6th, 5th and 3rd fret where you change to a G major triad while alternately picking the G and E strings and muting the B. Then during the C chord (How come you taste so good?)play the same pattern but start at the 12th fret and end at the 8th with C major triad. Feel free to improvise and embellish as the spirt moves you and please let me know how it works for you and if anyone else has some suggestions chime in!

Any particular show that it really stands out?
I think I know what you're talking about,
but I can't seem to find it.
Of course it would help if I wasn't
doing 9 other things at the same time I'm listening.

I can't really picture which line you're talking about. Especially since the girl behind me is operting the TV set and has cranked up the chick from American Idol and her plastic singing.

I can play it, but I can't explain it. Just listen to the song, find a root note and screw around in that area and you will start hearing it.

Thanks for the help, ChrisM. I'll try it tonight, then: Let's see how my vibrato works on this, haha. I was messing around the G chord on the 10th fret but couldn't find it.

This is one of the ways Taylor does it in 1972, in 1973 he alters it with:

In the key of G (yeah yeah) start at the 7th fret with a G7 and descend in half steps to the triad of Gmajor: E string third fret, Gstring 4th fret). Watch your timing: the F# is not part of the G scale, so it has to dissolve into the descending scale. Timing is crucial. When to C (How come ya) then play: Estring fifth fret, G string 6th, slide both two semitones up and down again, and end with a country bend Cpentatonic (between 5th and 7th fret).

It actually sounds a lot harder then it really is when you write it down!

Many thanks, Mathijs. I'll try both versions on the weekend, then. My neighbours are gonna get an overdose of Brown Sugar live versions.

Good luck! Don't worry about not playing it precisely. I have been "studying" the soundboard Brown Sugar versions from the 1972 tour, and there's not one version I can get exactly right. He always throws in some licks that are just to unclear to copy. Also, in 1973 he started playing more slide on BS, and then it gets harder technically to play what he does, especially if he switches from slide to fingers.
