For Live Concerts: "Handsome Girls" or the classic "Liver than you'll ever be" - both are pure Stones!!!!

Anyone else own the 4 CD box called "Hot Stuff Vol 1, Live"? Quality
ranges from fair to excellent. But it's a great history from
Hyde Park '69 to RFK '94. There is a "Vol. 2, Studio" that I have
been looking for years. The Label is the now defunct "Great Dane"
But I also say "Handsome Girls" is super.

It's also good to have a lousy performance on hand
just to compare.
For instance, I love JFK '78 just as much as Handsome Girls.
Something about the sloppiness is wonderful.
Waiting on 50 Million Friends from '81 is nice and sloppy,
as is the last Buffalo gig from '75.
A friend of mine (God rest his soul) saw the first gig in Philadelphia in '81.
I asked him waht he thought: "they were awful. It was the Stones. It was great!"
Words of wisdom.

Gotta go with Handsome from 78 and Hampton Roads 1981. Personally fond of Hampton Roads boot.....anyone here who bashes Ronnie's contributions to the Stones or tries to say that he could never play well......check this boot out, Ronnie firing off some pretty hot licks, Leads and real guitar interplay. The guitars on the Hamptons boot smash you over the goddamn head. Just like they should.

It's one straight from the heart

My personal fave is "Bloody Night in Seattle, '81" because it was my very first
show(s), Oct. 14, 15. It is so named cause a girl fell from one of the outside
Kingdome ramps to her death on the 2nd night. Sad. Also have a poor quality VHS boot, taken from the Spectravision big screen feed. Better than having just a
concert stub.

I was at JFK '78. Often tops "Worst Gig They Ever Played" lists. Later found out Mick had the flu and a fever of 102 degrees and they almost cancelled. I remember waiting for them to go on, about 90 minutes after Foreigner finished their set, and they kept making announcements apologizing for the delay and telling us "The Stones want to do a GOOD show for you!" and I thought, "Geez, that doesn't sound very promising!"

Tatters: True. You can hear it in Mick's voice.
Got to hand it to him for going on.
I've played gigs sick as a dog and it's HARD work.
You kind of sweat it out, but you're exhausted afterwards.
That was the gig that RS magizine reviewed and really let them have it.
Of course if you knew the lead singer was sick, wouldn't
you review another show just to be fair? Not RS that year.
They were out for blood on the Stones, they really were.
However, in '81, they thought they were the greatest thing
since Stella Atoirs. Quite funny. Jan Wenner's a real ass.

In '78 RS loved Springsteen and that was it. They constantly compared his tour to the Stones - I think they still had the US Bicentennial buzz from '76 and weren't going to give a British band better reviews.

By '81, the staff had also changed and the focus changed at RS. So they made up Mick as the second coming of JC. Go figure.

The boot that stays in my CD player the most is Brussels Affair. Second place goes to Tokyo 95. They never sounded better!

Death of John Lennon had a lot to do with the relative degree of hysteria that surrounded the '81 tour. There was a strong "Thank God at least we still have the Stones" vibe. And even then, we didn't think it would be for much longer. Lots of of jokes about the next tour being in wheelchairs, etc.

Also, Hold On Tight (MSG 1975). Gotta be one of the best audience recordings ever!

We should also open a "Best AUD recording bootlegs poll"

My picks would be :
All the Crystal Cat releases : Cirkus Stockholm + Olympia + Astoria 2003 + MSG 1998 + Chicago 1997

Also great : Ahoy 2003, Paris 82, Olympia 95, of course Oakland 69, Toronto 99 and much more ...
