Love 'em all but I have to say Hampton: Bill's bass and Keith's solo are ace.

"The version played at Altamont only seems to underscore the dark foreboding surrounding that event, and sometimes when I hear it I still mistake it for Sympathy For The Devil, because it has that dark and dangerous vibe to it with the slow and heavy fury of those dirty guitars"

Exactly the same usually happens to me when I Watch the GS film! Since the first time I saw it 16 years ago, it ALWAYS happens.
A little strange...

I usually use the studio version for my yearly "example of bad taste - yet funny" gesture for the morning opening song in my office each March 8th... grinning smiley (thankfully I work with cool people who just take it as a joke).

I agree Wandering Spirit, I love Take the A Train intro, it is powerful and a great memory of the anticipation of waiting for the Stones to take the stage. And then UMT comes crashing in with such force. Awesome version.

In 1990 I went to see the Champions Cup finals Milan vs. Steaua. For the whole drive from Milano to Barcelona (approx 7.30 hrs) I alternated Some Girls and a cassette with Under My Thumb only in all its versions (studio, Got live, Still Life, can't remember the boot versions).

Best live version is Still Life hands down!

I like this version/performance. (Incidentally: Has Mick ever elsewhere greeted the audience before the first song started?)

yes

I agree micwer and I like that version best myself. Heard it described as regal at one time and I think I'd have to agree with that.

Jagger's '81-82 stage outfits are indeed cringe-inducing, his worst ever.

They certainly are "off to the races" on that Leeds version. Playing so fast kills the groove. The Dallas version is much better.

jagger is terrible on this tour...i simply cannot stand it.
UMT from 81/82 tour is very good though...but 1969 live version for me.

I have always loved this version. It contains some of my favorite Keith playing. I post this one and not the one with the video because the camera work is simply distracting. The medley to I'm Free (with Taylor's nice little solo) is missing.

I have always preffered it played at a slower tempo, and the Ya yas version will never be bettered. IMHO.

What a drag it is gettin' old

the guitar work Keith plays at Altamont is brilliant.
not just the solo (which is perfect for Keith), but throughout the song.
fantastic given he probably had 0 hours sleep the night before and completely high (and scared!).

Tour 81/82, esp. the version from the Sun Devil boot - Stew or Ian Mclagan plays brilliantly piano and Ronnies rhythm guitar is fantastic.

Best live version of UMT by far imo, but I prefer I'm Free in the slow, meandering version instead of the quick medley version with the little solo.

Still Life version which comes from 1st new jersey show. A few edits but the rest of the show is this energetic. The best Stones concert I've heard. This show should be released. If i was more computer savy i would post this show. Track down the stereo soundboard from wolfgang's vault and you won"t be disappointed.
