Just off the top of my head, I'd say the Doors s/t and Appetite for Destruction by GnR, but those are probably two of the top albums of all time, so it's hard to improve too much on it. Maybe VH1, too. I'd disagree on Led Zep 1 being their best, just my opinion. It's not too hard to see why first albums might really showcase the best of an artist, though. They've probably had their best material just waiting for a deal and played it to death, too. Then comes the true test, if they can do it facing a deadline and write stuff that's just as good after the debut.

It seems that there are lot of artists/bands who have produced their best work later in their career, they have evolved, they have progressed which make sense as more work is devoted in perfecting their craft. But they are also others who seem to have given the best they had just at the beginning in fact in their first record. I know it is subjective but here is a few of my list of "the first was the better" :
Led Zeppelin.
Brian Wilson first solo record ;[en.wikipedia.org])
Sylvain Sylvain (New York Dolls) [youtu.be]
Dexy Midnight Runners [en.wikipedia.org]

Oasis - Definitely Maybe.
Great record - their follow up may have outsold it, but none of their albums came close to touching their debut release.

1. Johnny Cash: The Fabulous (His first album for Columbia from 1958. Hot & Blue guitar on Sun was a compilation)
2. Richard (Dickey) Betts: Highway Call
