OK, with Led Zeppelin, for me, what it was is that I have never been so affected by a first LP then I have with that one, It was blues on Steroids with guitar work that drove me nuts. So technically maybe not their best, but it was the one that afftected me the most.

It seems that there are lot of artists/bands who have produced their best work later in their career, they have evolved, they have progressed which make sense as more work is devoted in perfecting their craft. But they are also others who seem to have given the best they had just at the beginning in fact in their first record. I know it is subjective but here is a few of my list of "the first was the better" :
Led Zeppelin.

I agree with Led Zeppelin.
For me personally I would have to add:
Are You Experienced (Jimi Hendrix Experience)
Doors (for me it was their best album)
and maybe 10 by Pearl Jam.

king Crimson - In The Court Of The Crimson King.
THAT line up ended within 2 months of it being released, but the following line ups going under the name with Fripp at helm never topped it.
I'm sure the original line up would have topped it had they stayed together though.

Just off the top of my head, I'd say the Doors s/t and Appetite for Destruction by GnR, but those are probably two of the top albums of all time, so it's hard to improve too much on it. Maybe VH1, too. I'd disagree on Led Zep 1 being their best, just my opinion. It's not too hard to see why first albums might really showcase the best of an artist, though. They've probably had their best material just waiting for a deal and played it to death, too. Then comes the true test, if they can do it facing a deadline and write stuff that's just as good after the debut.

Patti Smith's "Horses" for me.
I can understand why she's a "love her or hate her" kind of artist but I bloody love this album. She never came close after (IMOHO).

The Byrds "Mr. Tambourine Man" great lp....The Ramones 1st lp...im not a big Aerosmith fan, but I think their debut lp is their best...Cheap Trick's 1st lp
