I believe that I last saw a list from Rolling Stone magazine was only a couple of years ago of the top 500 albums of all time had Exile at number three and Pet Sounds and Sgt Pepper were ahead of it. The White Album is marred by Number 9 and the Wall over all of the albums on the list is a JOKE except for the Smashing Pumpkins. These lists are stupid and always changing.

All these Rolling Stone lists are ridiculous.
These people are never into anything new, they live in the past.
Why the hell one would want to compile such a list is unclear to me.
Time could have been spent better digging out cool new stuff instead of going over the old that their readership already knows.
I love playing those records mentioned, but I don't need rolling stone to tell me about them. Why doesn't rolling stone write about Deafheaven, for instance?
Even in their metal list they were conservative. They put in a live recording of Mastodon in there. Mastodon as a band were great but their last studio effort was a bit of a dogshit in the doorway. They have released a couple of years ago a live recording already. The new release is good, but only digital, and why should that feature?
Damn rolling stone and their tired conservatism.

Yes, RS has sucked for many many years.

I think it's about time they included some bootleg collections in these "polls" of theirs, since I've got enough to at least round out a top 10 list myself. But I can't enter a Rolling Stone readers' poll, because I'm not a Rolling Stone reader and haven't been for a good 27 years or so.grinning smiley

Okay, I'll bite. What's your top ten if bootlegs are included?

***I have quite a large collection of bootleg LPs myself so hopefully I'll know and/or own a number that you list.

Exactly--these lists are totally meaningless, but they're always good for a little ballistic reader response, drawing attention to the mag, etc. etc. The bottom line is, people have different opinions about stuff. Which is not news. grinning smiley

I'd say it's more when they are too freakin lazy to go out and dig up a real story or find an interesting guest. But, yeah, these lists are pretty meaningless...except I am always a tiny bit happy to see The Stones at or near the top. grinning smiley

Not that I was actually fishing, but since I got a bite I'll reel it in.

My Beatle boots alone should fill out the top 10, or at least come close to it. For each album they made I have the album sessions on disc 1 plus the alternate album with extras, outtakes, and singles mixes on disc 2:

1. Please Me Do (for Please Please Me)
2. One Before 911 (for With The Beatles)
3. Hard Days and Nights (for Hard Day's Night)
4. Every Little Thing (for Beatles for Sale)
5. Help Sessions, aka Songs For Eleanor (for Help)
6. Soul Sessions (for Rubber Soul)
7. Revolving (for Revolver)
8. Alternate Sgt. Pepper (disc 1 is mono mix plus outtakes and isolated tracks, disc 2 is "Making of Sgt. Peppers" with interviews, etc.)
The White album sessions is 4 discs and Abbey Road sessions (with mono mixes) is 5 discs, so I suppose those don't really count.
9. For Rolling Stones, I have an edition of Rolled Gold with 18 extra tracks, Gonna Rip This Joint, which is Inglewood Forum live July 10 and 13, 1975, and Voodoo at Halloween, which is Halloween Night in Oakland, 1994.
10. The Final Countdown by Syd Barrett is a double dip into his unreleased studio sessions from 1974 as well as BBC rarities from 1970.

However, I do still listen to official double-album releases--I just wouldn't make a top 10 list of them, that's all.

Now that I've completed my very own bootleg reader's poll, I think I'll take the next logical step and create my very own magazine. I'll call it.... Rolling Stoned, the unofficial bootleg version of the official magazine. It'll start off with a Rumors section--I find official news a bit boring, to be honest. Every issue will include a top 10 list of the current lamest top 10 lists from the official magazine. Oh, and the review section will spotlight the best, rarest, and latest bootlegs, along with plenty of ads pointing the way to the best bootleg sources.

Well, I'm really getting ideas flowing now. I think I'll log off and get started. What should be the name of the editor-in-chief?--I know, John Weener. Hey, this is fun!smoking smiley

They are all CD.

All of the Beatles and the Barret I got by mail order from this Mid-West U.S. supplier: [cdcollection.fcpages.com] It's mostly CDs, but if you check the listings carefully they do have some choice vinyl selections as well. They also have a DVD catalog, so if you order from them, ask for the DVD catalog as well.

The above source also has the two live Stones titles I listed, but the Rolled Gold plus 18 is a Russian bootleg I got from a used record shop in Boston: [www.iye.com] They do mostly vinyl, so you might want to call them and see if they will ship you something by mail. Quite an amazing selection in a huge basement room--not many vinyl dealers like this left.

One section of the Boston store.

What a shitty top 2, both pretentious and half-filler. Exile, then Blonde on Blonde, then a big drop off to whatever is third.

It's as simple as I'm into concert albums for the moment - as you probably can tell from lots of the titles on my list (5 of them are purely or partly concert albums).

SG Live In Texas on vinyl is also a more interesting listen than Exile, right now thumbs up

Exile is far superior to the White Album.

The White Album would have been a tremendous single disc if they cut the correct songs - too much filler.

quote]

If we picked the best 14 songs from "The Beatles", lined up in the right order, would the single album still sell 20 million copies? Or would it just be a critically better album rather than a massive seller?

Which songs would you pick of the 30 to make a single album? What would be the running order?

I'm afraid I don't know Quadrofenia, but I do know very well Tommie and I think it's a fantastic double. I've listened to the White Album quite some times these days and I love it, but it misses the coherence Exile does have, so I prefer Exile to it.
