Exile named # 3 Best Double LP of All Time

3. The Rolling Stones - 'Exile on Main Street'
Nearly 40 years after the release of Exile on Main Street, Keith Richards was still trying to figure out what made the album so magical. "There was something about the rhythm section sound down there [in France]," he said in 2010. "Maybe it's the concrete, or maybe it's the dirt, but it has a certain sound to it that you couldn't replicate if you tried." Today, the album is seen as the Stones' absolute best work, but there was no huge single off the double album and it was met with some very mixed reviews.

"We kind of expected that just from the fact that it was a double album," said Richards. "First of all, the record company wanted to cut it in half. So we said, 'Oh, this is not looking good.' But also we insisted, 'No, this is what we did. This is Exile on Main Street, and we insist that it's a double album.' So it kind of got a slow take-off, but ever since then, it's been up there. Also, it's the first album with no particular single on it, you know? There was no 'Brown Sugar' or whatever. We made it as an album, rather than looking for a hit single."

A top 10 double albums without 'Songs in the key of Life' is a joke.

I can't argue with that list too much. You always kind of figure the White Album will be at the top of the list. A little surprised to see The Wall ranked higher than Exile and Blonde on Blonde (though quite a few were ranked higher than the latter) there is no doubt it had a huge cultural impact with the film and the famous live shows, plus a shitload of airplay on classic rock radio. Something Exile doesn't get a lot of.

I would replace Melon Collie with Frampton Comes Alive. But I guess RS needed to come up with one for the Generation X readers.

At least Metal Machine Music wasn't on the list.

'The White Album' and "The Wall" are ahead of Exile in this readers poll. My rating puts Exile ahead of both. I can't stand anything in "The Wall". You would have to pay me to see it performed live by Waters

"Don't Pass Me By" and "Guitar Gently Weeps" are good but most of that album is a bore and self indulgent. IIRC most of the album is tunes written by one Beatle who then has the others function as session players. No so much group effort here

Although I acknowledge that they are all great albums, I never feel the urge to listen to any of the albums on that list other than Exile and Fillmore East.

BTW, I seem to recall "Tumbling Dice" being a hit, but maybe I'm wrong.

1. Exile
2. Layla
3. Quadrophenia

Put those in whatever order you want then go from there. I would add Kinks Kronikles but I know it doesn't really qualify, though it seems like it should.

All these Rolling Stone lists are ridiculous.
These people are never into anything new, they live in the past.
Why the hell one would want to compile such a list is unclear to me.
Time could have been spent better digging out cool new stuff instead of going over the old that their readership already knows.
I love playing those records mentioned, but I don't need rolling stone to tell me about them. Why doesn't rolling stone write about Deafheaven, for instance?
Even in their metal list they were conservative. They put in a live recording of Mastodon in there. Mastodon as a band were great but their last studio effort was a bit of a dogshit in the doorway. They have released a couple of years ago a live recording already. The new release is good, but only digital, and why should that feature?
Damn rolling stone and their tired conservatism.

Exile is far superior to the White Album.

The White Album would have been a tremendous single disc if they cut the correct songs - too much filler.

I vote...

1. Exile
2. London Calling
3. Blonde on Blonde
4. Physical Graffiti

And I'm not the biggest Zeppelin fan. I just like that record a lot.

Edit: almost forgot about Bob.

I guess Stevie Wonder's "Songs In The Key of Life", Little Feat's "Waiting For Columbus" and Jimi's "Electric Ladyland" must have been tied at Number 11.

I'd have also liked to see an honorable mention for J. Geils Band "Blow Your Face Out" and Elton's "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road" but will forgive those ommitions until the top 25 list comes out.

Think I'll play "Waiting For Columbus" when I get home tonight just out of spite... My ears and heart will be SO happy though!

Peace,
Mr DJA

10. Soft Machine - Third

I'm afraid I don't know Quadrofenia, but I do know very well Tommie and I think it's a fantastic double. I've listened to the White Album quite some times these days and I love it, but it misses the coherence Exile does have, so I prefer Exile to it.
