A bit of promotion for Rob Reid's favorite pocket camera ... and some beautiful photos.

Shooting the Rolling Stones with the ‘Best Pocket Camera Ever Made’

[petapixel.com]

Editor's note: Sure it is a pro-camera blog but it is also a great report with Stones photos...

Thanks for posting! Very nice shots, and shows how one can really bump things up a notch or two by shooting in RAW, and then knowing how to manipulate all the data that gets saved in that mode. (This is a worthy post, btw, for those initially skeptical, or who happen to be curious about camera stuff.)

Makes you wonder what an Ethan Russell could've done back in '69 and '72 (or Leibovitz and Sykes in '75) with one of these little gems among their gear.

Expensive but very good.
f/1.8-4.9 is great for concerts.

I've had one of these for over a year and take it to every gig I attend. The two main lessons learned are that you have to be front of stage and that good lighting helps.

This may seem obvious, but I've been to lots of low level gigs where it's easy to be near the stage, but struggled to get "keepers" due to low lighting (the main problem is not being able to get a fast enough shutter speed to freeze motion, e.g., of the guitarist's hands). Stones shows are professionally lit - it's getting near the front is a problem!

I've had many, many great shots with this camera and hope to continue to do so. It's in a bag beside me as I type and is useful in any situation. I was doing a wildlife shoot in the Hebrides last year with pro quality gear and took a couple of seascapes with the RX100, one of which was published as photo of the day in the national press.

A great wee camera which delivers near DSLR quality in a pocket sized format. Worth every penny, if you ask me. Have seen no need to upgrade it to the mark 2 model.

There are many great cameras around. I changed into this one for the summer 2013 tour in USA & Canada, and it worked great:

Samsung EX2F

It is not the smallest camera but it does still fit in my pocked.

Other cameras I checked out and were told were great are including:

Nikon Coolpix P330
Canon SX280 HS

Bjornulf

fwiw- I dont own this camera, the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-HX50V but I have seen the results on youtube and I am amazed at both the quality, the zoomability and the video which came from it, go to 2:46, THE ZOOM IS ASTOUNDING

read about the camera in the youtube commnets or to see some of his other results/videos look here>> [www.youtube.com]

Again THANK YOU TO EVERYONE WHO CAPTURES concerts for us, WE APPRECIATE IT!!! So please ignore ANYONE trying to give you trouble about it, TRUE FANS LOVE YOU FOR CAPTURING AND POSTING VIDEOS FOR US!!!!

I hope a bunch of Japanese, Australian and other Stones fans run out and buy this camera (or another good one) and capture a ton of footage from the upcoming shows.

STONES!!

When I UN-officially shoot concerts, I take my Sony Cybershot DSC-H7 point & shoot. With 15X zoom....even great when not in front row.

But obviously the key is understanding how to use it and set it manually....and changing those settings as the lighting changes.

IORR............but I like it!

Take a look at 2:11-2:20 on the Oracle video. You can see Bjornulf and me (backwards hat) get a high five from Mick

I have the Canon SX280 and it has taken some great pictures. Sometimes it's hard for the camera to find the focus in the changing light..and of course the band members are rarely standing still...but it is by far the best one I have used.

Looks like Philadelphia 2 - check the pictures in the Reports section and it's the only show where all the stage costumes match:

I prefer the camera I shot these with. Canon G1X. Slightly larger than point n shoot, no detachable lens. Perfect if you are within first few rows. All below done without flash with very high ISO.

Excellent! Thanks for posting BostonLass. I haven't taken any photographs using the RAW format yet. This will give me the impetus to give it a try.

BV. So the recent photos you posted here were all done with the Samsung? They look fantastic! I would have thought you were using a DSLR with a large lens.
