And the city gets bigger as the country comes begging to town

PRECISELY.

Intelligent lyrics.

.......There's a whole painting in that line perhaps even a film ...

Agree with Rockman. If you like it or not, depends on the person.

Rock and a Hard Place, I Go Wild, and You Got Me Rocking? All of 'em stink! The first one's godawful pretentious crap, while the other two are Stones-by-numbers (like the rest of Voodoo Lounge).

But the first one has a committed band feel and some good bass and some good guitar sub-plots. It's more musically (and lyrically) adventurous and not 'by numbers'.

For all of that I forgive them recycling a one of Keith's (?) best riffs.

Thru And Thru
The Worst
New Faces
Moon Is Up

are not really Stones by numbers?

Have a listen to Rock And A Hard Place Live, I went to see them in Paris in 1990 which was great and this song rocks on the live boots.

I completely disagree...I think it depends on the lighting in the room.

I think it's an inspired song with good lyrics.

Starting with the very first line indeed:

The Fields of Eden - are full of Trash

also very good:

Building dream churches , with silver spires
While our Rogue children are playing Loaded Dice

Not sure why so many are so hard on this track. It's a recycled riff for sure but that's my only criticism if I have one.

I think the production is good and like the overall big sound on it. It doesn't have any melody you'd whistle but I think the song's hook lies in its urgency.

Lyrics are political which turns most off I guess. But they're pretty good by Jagger standards. And given he's the best lyricist in music along with Dylan and Lennon it's a great deal to continue living up to.

Really good guitar sounds too.

Nice one Kyle M.

Yes, guitar department was firing on all cylinders on that album.

You have a blast next month.

Best wishes from a fallen eagle, (thru the past darkly!).

"And the city gets bigger as the country comes begging to town" is a good one, for sure. Seriously, I'm very glad to have that pointed out…

But I'm not sure I'll ever get over:

"Stuck between a rock and a hard place/
You better stop and put on a kind face"

Wins the award for best misappropriation of the Soul Survivor riff.

I was so pumped about the Steel Wheels album/tour. Such a let down.

Takes the prize away from It Must Be Hell, that's for sure! Dire.

Send "Rock And A Hard Place" Ringtone to your Mobile
"Rock And A Hard Place"

The fields of Eden
Are full of trash
And if we beg and we borrow and steal
We'll never get it back
People are hungry
They crowd around
And the city gets bigger as the country comes begging to town
We're stuck between a rock
And a hard place
Between a rock and a hard place
This talk of freedom
And human rights
Means bullying and private wars and chucking all the dust into our eyes
And peasant people
Poorer than dirt
Who are caught in the crossfire with nothing to lose but their shirts
Stuck between a rock
And a hard place
Between a rock and a hard place
You'd better stop put on a kind face
Between a rock and a hard place
We're in the same boat
On the same sea
And we're sailing south
On the same breeze
Guiding dream churches
With silver spires
And our rogue children
Are playing loaded dice
Give me truth now
Don't want no sham
I'd be hung drawn and quartered for a sheep just as well as a lamb
Stuck between a rock
And a hard place
Between a rock and a hard place
You'd better stop
Put on a kind face
Can't you see what you've done to me

Great song!
There's such an energy in the song.
Bill and Charlie play very very great groove.

Maybe .........but I don't feel it.....which is the problem with all the songs they released after "Steel Wheels"....but I don't give up....still waiting ...for the real unplugged Rolling Stones

Never really liked this song but the bass break at the end is kind of funky and Sarah and Lisa are hot in the video. Other than that I will pass.
