Down the basement of Nellcote: Rip This Joint

Imo a bit too straightforward rocker that I don't want to hear when I wake up with a hangover. One of Bobby Keys' finest moments with the Stones (live), and some very relaxed counterplay by Taylor. He's throwing in some nice 7/13 fills and lovely melodies on several performances. Makes it more than bearable.

I wonder how it would have sounded if they played it at a slightly slower, looser boogie tempo, like Down the Road Apiece.

Everyone would have more time to play and the singer could be more singery.

I never liked it. It is too noisy, too frantic, too bipolar. It might have been better if it were slowed down considerably, along the lines of the studio version of Respectable.

I would much rather listen to All Down the Line than this waste of three minutes or so.

There was I thinking I was the grumpiest member here. grinning smiley

Nah. The last thing that song needs is a Taylor guitar solo.

You mean it makes it too long.

I simply cannot believe that no-one has mentioned Charlie's contribution yet. His performance demonstrates, definitively, what a jazz drummer can bring to rock n' roll. I've often thought that this song could be his single greatest recorded performance; the degree to which he makes it swing is just the absolute tops.

If you've got a drummer who you want to understand swing, then play them this.

No.

None of this is suitable or needed in any way...

Rather than bothering with guitar widdle in that way and a solo it would have rocked, swung and woooshed much better had he just focused in on the rhythm and helped power the engine along with Keith. smiling smiley

I disagree. Keith and Charlie (as DD pointed out) provided enough rhythm. Taylor created the perfect balance, yin and yang so to speak.

He weakens the live version up above rather than balances it.

The lyrics don't matter, you can't really hear them anyway. It's the speed of the guitar rhythms and the sharpness of the drum breaks you listen to. It's their Little Richard tribute. A bit of Long Tall Sally topped with Tutti Frutti.

I was about to add this videos... I made it to put Nicky's piano on the front. The guy was amazing... true rhythm piano, but without losing his melodie. Stu wasn't able to play like this, he was more a blues-oriented pianist. Nicky always sing on the piano, even in fast tempo. One and only!

This song is the tits. Absolutely brilliant speed freak 100mph boogie with a hurricane wind blowing your sweet ass down the rock'n'roll highway.

Your first sentence is one of those where I'm never quite sure if that means it's good or bad. grinning smiley However the next sentence removed the doubt, and I concur wholeheartedly. smileys with beer

Completely agree. The roll he does in the last verse after Mick sings ''make my day'' is one of my favourite Stones moments.

An absolute classic.

I don't get why everybody is talking about the "fast" tempo. The tempo is medium on the Exile version.

It has a 4/4 194 bpm feel, which is very fast in rock.smiling smiley
