There's a supercool Beach Boys/Brian Wilson one coming out too entitled The Big Beat. I'm hoping all those who care will buy the Beatles and Beach Boys sets because it could open up a lot of options for other bands. The Stones could seriously do with a release like this. I'll just mention Bill's Radio Luxembourg acetate again for example.

According to the articles posted, Apple are issuing this release solely because they wish to maintain the rights to the recordings. To me, anyway, it sounds a little hastily put-together. Supposedly it's 59 tracks, featuring BBC Radio recordings - already released on the 'Live At The BBC' CD's? - and multiple takes of songs recorded in 1963: A Taste Of Honey, Do You Want To Know A Secret. The only genuine interesting aspect is, in my opinion, the couple of demos that are finally getting an official release: I'm In Love and Bad To Me.

Won't the same kind of thing have to happen in the following years and for any bands or owners of unreleased copyrighted material?

I think that most of it is already in the hands of anyone with the Ultra Rare Trax and Great Dane BBC CD's right?

I have sessions CDs for the first two albums and they're a lot of fun.

One of the things you learn about listening to the sessions for their first album is that "I Saw Her Standing There" is not actually a Beatles title, but instead came from the control room. The song was originally titled by the band as "Seventeen".

But just before you hear engineer Norman Smith slating for taking 1, you hear George Martin telling Smith: "I think it ought to have a different title". Then Norman Smith announcing to the band: "Seventeen. Take 1". Then, just before launching into take 1, you hear McCartney at the mic mumble his reaction to the producer's suggestion: "Whaaat?"

I suspect this copyright issue is why the Stones' IBC material was added to Grrrrr Deluxe.

It's excellent but i'd prefer flac. I think they're 256.
All the same, even though i had it all already bar 1 track it's good to buy legitimately if only to encourage future release of such things and some tracks are an improvement quality-wise over the boots despite the aac.
From a musical point of view it's fab. Haven't got the Beach Boys one yet but will shortly.
I would hope they'll delve further into the archives - Revolver multi tracks please and the July 62 Cavern reel to reel that Sir Fab bought at auction a few years back.

Stones where are you - time to copy The Beatles again chaps (!) I would like Bill's 1964 Radio Luxembourg acetate please and anything else ya got 1962 to 1972 especially Panama Powder Room, Godzi and English Summer if you have it. Even the Shang a doo lang demo and Brian's song (Sure I Do ? ) acetates.
What are you waiting for ?

He says "I'm In Love given to The Merseybeats". Good to know he's researched what he's writing about.
Out takes, hissy, badly performed or otherwise, they still piss over his lazy ass journalism. In fact i wish the Pete Best bbc tracks were on this set coz then what i just said would be even more insulting.

I'm not fully understanding this. grinning smiley

Why are they only releasing partial parts of sessions? To protect copyright of all the unreleased recorded material won't they have to release it all? Instead of takes 7 and 8 of a song for example, why not all unreleased takes of all songs recorded during 1963?

Or is it the case that they actually only have takes 7 and 8, or are deeming the probable incomplete further takes as not worth copyrighting?

Does this law cover live recorded material as well?

It's the two demos that interest me the most. I'm familiar with both through the videos on You Tube, but I understand there is an upgrade in quality with this new iTunes release. I would have liked a release of all demos available. Lennon and McCartney composed quite a few tracks for other artist: Bad To Me, I'm In Love, One And One Is Two, World Without Love, Step-Inside Love, From A Window, etc. Even, I Wanna Be Your Man. winking smiley

I'm In Love is really rather good. Could have made an excellent B-side or EP track. Remember, Beatles B-sides were better than most of groups A-sides!

Beatles Bootleg Recordings 1963 out today (on itunes in Asia already, and already taken down I think) - to beat the EU copyright laws; Dylan has some 1963 stuff out aswell

Maybe the Stones will follow suit?

If the Stones are to follow suit, I guess they'll need to do what both Beatles and Dylan did and rush release their 1963 recordings out before the end of the year (Dylan did the same last year with his 1962 sessions, but the copyright on his 1961 material expired before the laws kicked in last year and as a result there are multiple versions of his debut album now available)

I seem to remember reading last year when the first Dylan Copyright Collection set came out that the regulations change in 2015 to 70 years instead of 50.

If true, that would mean they wont need to touch the late 60s stuff for another 20-25 years.

By which time none of us who care will be able to hear these songs anyway.

This post from the Dylan site expecting rain might clarify things a little, although I'm not saying its 100% factually accurate

I understand the legal situation on extension of copy rights in the European Union as follows.

The old directive (from 2006) stated that the copyrights on a performance expire after 50 years, unless the performance was lawfully published within this initial period of 50 years. In the latter case, the copyrights were protected for a another period of 50 years after the publication. These rules were valid for both the performer as well as the record producer. E.g. when a record was published in the same year as the performance was recorded, the copyrights ended after 50 years. On the other hand, if the record was published 49 years after the performance, the copyrights ended 99 years after the performance.

The new directive (from 2011, but taking full effect only since november 2013) extends the protection for the performer (not for the producer) to an initial period of 70 years after the performance in the following way: if the record producer fails to market a recording in the initial period of 50 years, the performer can get his rights back and market the performance himselve for an extra 20 years ('use it or lose it' provision). If, however, the performance is published within the initial period of 50 years, then the copyrights for both performer and publisher are protected for another period of 70 years after publication.

Apparently the producers were not well aware of the old directive and have only woken up after having read the new one. Therefore, the rights on a performance made in e.g. 1961 and not published before the end of 2011 has effectively expired in 2012 for the producers, whereas the performer can now market his rights until 2032. Some record producers have now understood that they have to publish the performances in time in order not to loose the marketing rights to the performers alone. E.g. the rights on Dylan’s performances that were effectively published for the first time in 2012 on the first “50th Anniversary Collection” album would have expired in 2063 under the old rules, but will now expire in 2083 under the new rules (both for the producer and for the performer).

The new rules make other, much more important (and complicated) improvements for both the performer and the producer. For more details have a look here:

Still there on UK i-tunes.

Just search for 'Beatles Bootleg' and there it is.

£34.99, though. Ouch.

They never have been a band for giving their music away at a discount. Even the barrel scraping stuff on downloads.

Speaking of which, its already on a certain 'Jack sparrow' type torrent site. As is the Dylan one.
