What is a Guitar Clinic?

I read a review about Bare Wires on Amazon.com where someone saw The Bluesbreakers at Fillmore East. They said the kid (Mick Taylor) was putting on a clinic and he was out of his head. I'm assuming that he meant that young Mick was great musically, not drugs. But was this sort of a meet and greet or an after party type of thing in the sixties where band members would show off their talents (for lack of a better description) and discuss music with fans? Just wondering.

A work shop.

Okay, but was this a common practice back then or even now? And did this occur before or after the show, or possibly by special invitation?

I don't think it was particularly common, then or now. I went to a bluegrass guitar workshop / clinic during a festival once. It didn't cost a lot and it was OK. One of the difficulties is that the paying participants can have vastly different standards of playing, from absolute beginner to virtuoso. If the material is set for the beginner, more experienced players find it boring (and that's what the workshop I attended was like). Set the bar higher and the less experienced players won't keep up.

Reviewer used "putting on a clinic" to describe an exceptional performance, not a meet and greet or after-party.

Well, that would certainly make sense when speaking about Mick Taylor. Wish I could have seen him performing live back in those days!

It is where guitars get their methadone.

He's right. It's just an expression that means this person was showing others "the way it's done". It's used in sports a lot, like if on team blows another out they'll say they put on a scoring clinic. Here it's saying that Taylor is the teacher and we're all the students.

It is a meeting in which a supposed master guitar players teach to others some tricks.
Something that Richards and Wood surely have never assisted
