Stadium to host major concert
Sources report Rolling Stones to perform

By John Yellig / Daily Progress staff writer
May 6, 2005

Scott Stadium will host its first major concert in more than four years this fall, and three University of Virginia sources said the act would be the Rolling Stones.

The concert, the first in the 61,500-seat stadium since the Dave Matthews Band played there in April 2001, is expected to take place the first or second weekend in October, when the football team is scheduled to play away games.

According to a news release, concert promoter Cellar Door Productions and Musictoday, a local firm that handles ticket sales for the Rolling Stones, will make a “major announcement” at Bryant Hall at Scott Stadium on Tuesday, the same day the Rolling Stones release their 2005 tour schedule in New York.

Representatives from the two companies declined to comment ahead of the announcement, saying they could neither confirm nor deny that the Stones would perform.

“I’m not going to speculate,” said Dee Larion, Cellar Door booking assistant and director of marketing in Virginia. “We’re still putting things together.”

UVa spokeswoman Carol Wood also declined to comment, but confirmed that the news conference will reveal that a musical act will perform.

“There is a media event on Tuesday, but I cannot confirm the name of the group at this time,” she said, adding that the university plans to host more major acts once the 15,000-seat John Paul Jones Arena opens in 2006. “The university looks at this upcoming announcement as the first of many important events that over time will take place at the university.”

Rumors about the Stones’ tour have been circulating for months. The Boston Herald revealed last week that the city issued permits for two summer concerts to be held at Fenway Park, but could not confirm the Stones would appear.

Outstanding news! I know there's a few Virginians on this board. Let's get something together!

Anastasio to open for Rolling Stones

From staff reports / Charlottesville Daily Progress
June 16, 2005

And the opening act for the Rolling Stones’ Scott Stadium show is … Trey Anastasio, formerly of Phish.

In addition to naming the opening act, concert promoters on Wednesday also made available an undisclosed number of “limited view” tickets for the sold-out Oct. 6 show. The tickets, priced at $60 and $95, became available at 5 p.m.

The upcoming show is the first major concert at Scott Stadium since the Dave Matthews Band played there in April 2001, and fans quickly snapped up tickets when they went on sale last month. Tickets soon popped up on eBay as well, commanding a premium well above their face values of $160, $95 and $60.

Anastasio, best known for his work with jam band Phish, recently enlisted a former collaborator and three others to form 70 Volt Parade. The quintet consists of Anastasio’s old friend Ray Paczkowski on keyboards along with Peter Chwazik on bass, Skeeto Valdez on drums and Les Hall on guitar and synthesizers.

The band made its debut April 1, playing a sold-out show at The Higher Ground in South Burlington, Vt. At the show, the band offered up a mix of old and new, including songs by Phish and a cover of the Beatles’ “I Am the Walrus.”

Opening acts for other stops on the Stones’ On Stage World Tour include Pearl Jam, the Black Eyed Peas, The Tragically Hip, John Mayer Trio and Maroon 5.

The limited-view tickets for the Scott Stadium show were still available late Wednesday through all Ticketmaster outlets or by calling (888) 808-8660. They could also be purchased online at www.ticketmaster.com.

The $60 and $95 ticket prices do not include an additional Ticketmaster service charge. At the Ticketmaster Web site, the charge was listed at $15.60.
