Has Mick J ever played a guitar solo? (Recorded)
Posted by: Kirk ()
Date: November 6, 2013 23:55

We know about his guitar playing in several songs, studio and live. What about taking a solo? Does anything come into mind?

Now, I'm thinking of the slide guitar in Back of my Hand. Does this count?

Sure, but does Doom and Gloom count as well?

I thought about this one too, but this seems to be closer to providing a riff. I'm trying to find any specific, clear solo part within a tune, be it in his solo stuff or Stones work.

The intro of Heaven as well as the rest of the guitar parts there is him too, right? But then again, that's not a solo.

Come On In My Kitchen/Me And The Devil Blues/I'm Mad Blues from Performance, but it's mainly rhythm, though it's got some single notes as well.

Isn't this his slide guitar on Blue?

On Love You Live, he only plays guitar on Fingerprint File. He doesn't play any guitar on If You Can't Rock Me.

I always had the feeling that it is him doing the solo in "Streets of Love".

I am ready to bet a beer that the solo on SOL is Ronnie.

He plays some lead licks in the clip where he introduces Brown Sugar to Tina and Ike Turner backstage, if I remember correctly.

I'm on grinning smiley

When we listen to the live versions, where Ronnie plays it (together with Mick) - just as with Doom And Gloom (they used the same approach here), it sound totally different to the static and a bit clumsily take(s) on the album.

If you listen to Mick's "solo" on God Gave Me Everything from Goddess, you'll hear the similarity. It's Mick's right hand-technique that reveals him.

Just my two cents on this smiling smiley

Isn't it Kravitz playing the solo on GGME? Got some doubts on SOL too...but need to check some live versions as I don't remember seeing him play the solo there...and he doesn't at least not in Austin ->

But yeah, the guitar backstage with Ike and Tina Turner in the GS bonus material is pretty impressive!

Kravitz is a tad better to play stuff like that.

Didn't Mick play that intro line etc on Terrifying ?

Not exactly a guitar solo but certainly a "lead guitar line"

I'm hearing Mick in the right speaker, playing some of it with Ronnie.

Great acoustic licks by Keith towards the ending, btw thumbs up

Mick does a great job on Hold On To Your Hat along with Keith,
Ronnie is on Bass guitar.

No, not if you talk about the melodic line with clean sound that comes in after a few bars of the Keith riff.

Mick would never end it like Ronnie does, with that bluesy double stop. He doesn't have the technique to master that + it sounds like classic Ronnie.

And here is the lineup on the track:

Drums: Charlie Watts
Bass: Bill Wyman
Electric guitars: Keith Richards & Ron Wood (incl. leads)
Lead vocals: Mick Jagger
Background vocals: Keith Richards & Lisa Fischer
Organ: Chuck Leavell
Keyboards: Matt Clifford
Trumpet: Roddy Corimer (of The Kick Horns)
Shakers: Mick Jagger

Doesn't he do those wah fills on "Suck on the Jugular"? They're kind of lead-ish.

He plays a lot iffy slide on the Surrey Rehearsals bootleg.

He also plays the acoustic slide guitar on This Place Is Empty.

I'm not sure, since it's been a while since I've listened to that one.

However, he plays similar stuff on Rain Fall Down and Gunface as well. Not lead guitar, more like lead rhythm guitar.
