Set List - 1986 Stones Tour - DISCUSS!!!
Posted by: stonesstein ()

Breaking news - the Stones did NOT tour in 1986 behind Dirty Work!!!! This was also the last new LP they did not tour behind, so there was probably the need to open up some Undercover songs.

However, IF they had toured, I think that the following songs would have been in the mix for 1986, in some order like this:

1. Start Me Up
2. She's So Cold
3. Tumbling Dice
4. Had It With You
5. Undercover of the Night
6. Doo Doo Doo Doo (Heartbreaker) or It's All Over Now (see 1994)
7. One Hit (to the Body)
8. Beast of Burden
9. Rocks Off or All Down the Line
10. Rip This Joint or (occasionally) Shattered
11. Wild Horses or Far Away Eyes or Dead Flowers or Let It Bleed
12. She Was Hot
13. Harlem Shuffle
14. Before They Make Me Run (or Happy)
15. You Can't AlWays Get What You Want
16. Down the Road Apiece or Everybody Needs Somebody to Love
17. When the Whip Comes Down
18. @#$%& or Let's Spend the Night Together
19. Jennifer Juniper (OK, NOT! - wake up!!) Waiting on a Friend or Emotional Rescue
20. Angie or Worried About You
21. It's Only Rock and Roll
22. Miss You
23. Brown Sugar
24. Satisfaction or Street Fighting Man or Jumping Jack Flash
25. Street Fighting Man or Jumping Jack Flash or Honky Tonk Women
26. Jumping Jack Flash or Street Fighting Man or Honky Tonk Women

Encore: Jumping Jack Flash or Street Fighting Man or Satisfaction or Honky Tonk Women or Sympathy for the Devil (once)

Other tracks played one or more times:

Too Tough
Respectable
Hand of Fate
Live With Me
Bitch
Well, Alright (once)
Route 66
Black Limosiune
Around and Around
Have You Seen Your Mother, Baby, Standing in the Shadow?
Blueberry Hill
Dirty Work (twice)
Johnny Be Goode (St. Louis - 2nd show only)
Hot Stuff
Too Much Blood (opening night - failed miserably)

Thoughts?????????????????????????

WHY?????

Too Rude was played on Keith's 1988 tour, like wise Winning Ugly on Mick's (albeit only once) so I guess these would have made any 1986 Stones tour...........and Ron played pretty beat up a few times so maybe he could have got it squeezed in, maybe..........

Sounds like a good setlist i was at the too much blood show it sucked so much ass

Neat ideas, there. I would predict, though, that the setlist would stay relatively the same throughout the tour as the ones before and after them did, with few changes. Also, I would assume they would play more songs from that period, no matter how obscure. Despite conforming to their usual tour ways, why not something a little interesting. Like a little blues break maybe... then again... imagine them playing any of their pre-satisfaction tunes in their mid-80's fashion. Overall, cool premise, but a bit unrealistic.

Knowing how poor of an LP it was as well as its poor reception the set list would have been much closer to this:

1. Start Me Up
2. She Was Hot
3. One Hit (To The Body)
4. Undercover Of The Night
5. When The Whip Comes Down
6. Shattered
7. Hang Fire
8. Bitch
9. Harlem Shuffle
10. Imagination
11. Tumbling Dice
12. Honky Tonk Women
13. Beast Of Burden
14. Before They Make Me Run
15. Happy
16. Angie
17. You Can't AlWays Get What You Want
18. Respectable
19. All The Way Down
20. Dance Little Sister
21. It's Only Rock and Roll
22. Miss You
23. Brown Sugar
24. Street Fighting Man
25. Jumpin' Jack Flash
26. Satisfaction

I think they would play One Hit, Harlem Shuffle, Dirty Work and maybe Winning Ugly on the regular basis. They could ocasionally play also Fight and Had It With You, maybe Keith could play Too Rude on some shows. I doubt they would ever play Hold Back, Sleep Tonight and Back To Zero live.

As far as tracks from Undercover:
Undercover, She Was Hot, Tie You Up, I Wanna Hold You - all or most shows.
Pretty Beat Up, All The Way Down - some shows
Too Much Blood, Too Tough, It Must Be Hell - never or once/twice

I'm not sure about Feel On Baby - either they would never play it or play it on every show and jam around it and experiment make it unique part of the tour.

I think Mick would have been very conservative then like he was with the BANG tour. This isn't the Stones of the SOME GIRLS attitude. Album sales and chart rankings have pretty much determined what they play. Hence why A BIGGER BANG was basically ignored. The set lists for the TATTOO YOU tours and STEEL WHEELS tours were quite static. They hardly changed. There's no reason this one would have been any different. Winning Ugly would have fallen flat. Had It With You would have been ridiculous live.

UOTN has never worked well live. It's just a space eater. A waste of time. No wonder Keith doens't enjoy playing it - there's nothing to it.

As cool as it was that they played it it was placid. It's never had the drive and force live that the studio version has.

It didn't the drive of the studio version, that's true (mainly because the studio version may feature Mick's best vocals ever) - but it's a lovely version - just about as good as the Stones can get, imo.

This was a good tour, but man, you have to admit, the outfits Mick wore were pretty ridiculous!

Keith could have developed the song in to a great song, lots of riffs, great solo options, tempo change etc. I guess he was too lazy and just wanted "sleep tonight". Sorry to say, but they could have carried the song further than just one try. Maybe on "52 counting" it is time for UOTN instead of ER.

UOTN would have been, in spot # 4, one of the key songs of this set! Look at 1989.......

Same set list from 50 and Counting, but replace Doom and Gloom and One More Shot with One Hit and Harlem Shuffle. Not much change with the set lists since '81.

What do you mean? They played it lots of times during the 89 tour. They played it on the B2B tour, and they played it on the SAL-shows.

What Keith did here on this version was indeed to develop his riffing, using a more funky, James Brown-ish approach. That is one of the things that make this a great version!
