I feel my lower back already
Why? The MK1 is a great sounding amp as DP stated. I have to admit it requires a bit of experience to get a good sound out of it, otherwise it will fight you.
Taylor used one on his first solo record in '79, and like his playing or not, his tone was great.

Who else got this sound out of the Boogies at the time?
The others who played them all fell for the temptation of twisting that lead drive-knob a little too much, imo...
The point I think is a bit wider than analysing the specific sound of a Mark I. But I agree. Many players make the mistake of using too much gain...and this is never more apparent than when folks are looking for a "Stonesy" sound.
They have sometimes used more overdriven sounds for lead work [especially in the Ampeg & Mesa days] but the way to get a good "Stones" sound is to go for that "clean with attitude" kind of thing .
Any decent 6L6 or 6V6 amp, pushed just to the edge of breaking up, will do the trick if you have the chops down.

Depends which amps you mean.
Apart from the more Metal orientated models, most Boogies still feature a Fender like voicing for the lower gain channel... and would be more than OK for "Stonesy stuff"

I haven't tried the newer Boogies, but I doubt you'll get the vintage Mark 1-sound out of them...

Recently using a MK5, very versatile, on rare outside occasions only. I tend to use my Pod HD500 more and more, cause after 10 minutes nobody notices the difference in sound anymore, plus it saves you a lot of work and lower back pain.

It's more dry, as well as with more character, than the JCM, which indeed became the standard middle of the road rock guitar sound, imo
