Effing right-on, DP. And WAtts.

Keith evolving in front of our very ears.

Who plays the lurching organ/keyboards?

Good track!

In a way Keith was on his peak in 67-69. He still hadn't found his own - rather limited - player identity and felt challenged from all those new guitar gods.
In 67-69 Keith still tried hard . .

He was at least on his peak creatively round this time. This guitar arrangement is so neatly put together, with some delicate touches that really makes the song, imo.

One of my all time favourite Stones songs. Keith is fantastic here.
The mood of this song is spot on: music and lyrics are just one.

There are many great moments on Satanic Majesties, but the album is so unfocused and badly produced that much of it kind of disappeared in the mess. If Jimmy Miller had started collaborating with the Stones one year earlier than he did, it probably would have turned out better. Who knows, maybe it would have sounded a bit like Traffic's first two albums.

Effin great song. Sounds even better stripped down like this. I always thought that somewhere under all the weird psychedelia Keith was rocking somewhere.

Does anyone know if this is available as just an audio track....high quality MP3 or Flac or similar?

I will crank this instead of having another cup of coffee to get the day going!

Lots of goodies like this (and this one included) on the "Satanic Sessions"-bootleg set. I don't have it myself, unfortunately, but I will get it very soon!

Thanks Dandelion. I have a bootleg called 'The Alternate Satanic Majesties' that has a couple of singles from the era thrown in, along with a couple of songs that maybe never made it. But nothing new.

Would love to hear the stripped down tracks and really hear the band over the production. It is an album that scared and fascinated me as an 8 yr old kid. I had not listened to it much till recently. But there is some good stuff on it. Interesting to hear it without all the production.

His Majesty knows this box set like the back of his hand, I reckon. Let's hope he'll chime in with the details.

I've never understood why they never took something like this, put some dark and rough Jagger vocals on it and put it out instead of wimping it up and making it sound so light on the album. I'm all for softer elements and softer songs once it a while but to take something like this and soften it up is a crying shame. Thanks for the post, great find.

The Stones probably came to the same conclusion around spring 1968.

And then went back to wimping things up on all albums from Dirty Work onwards.

2000 Man - light?

Shaddup! It's a perfect blend of folky, bluesy, gutsy psychedelia.

This is music!

Keith's acoustic and electric work on the released version is damn amazing. Hi electric work on the recordings in process as found on Satanic Sessions is damn fine too.

cool smiley

Always thought 2000 Man stood out on this underated LP. In this form it suggests further mixing would have let this song really soar. The percussion otherwise is a little heavy in the mix IMHO , but the song still kicks ass. Keith is really in top form here, with a really fat tone. Gibson? It flat out rocks hard.

They should have played this back in 1999-2000!

Listening to that clip, if I didn't know who or what it was, I would have thought it was Booker T & The MGs. It has the sound and feel of Stax.

here you hear the Keith that we all came to know and love finding his style and strength. Open riffing and just 'letting go'.

The signs were there on Buttons but not on Aftermath.

I think it was probably Acid and Dope (cannabis) that 'freed' him - set him loose.
And some would add the influence of Anita (not musically!).

The time wasn't right, at least in the charts.

The Stones were in the middle of chasing trendy hits.

What was in the charts from 63 to 67?

Pop Beatles stuff and Motown and then Pop Folk stuff and then Pop Psychedelic stuff.

Keith and Mick were writing trend songs and even Satisfaction is a Motown type song basically.

By 1968 the Psychedelic was becoming a bit old and Keith just went back to his Berry/County/Blues core thing.

2000 man is basically Country Rock in the Psychedelic trend period.

Just listen to all of the Country type guitar fills in 2000 man.

Keith had already picked up the Nashville tuning in 1964 that would be used on JJF in 1968.

"I learned that from somebody in George Jones' band in San Antonio in 1964"

Yes indeed, if only it weren't for his parallel tendency to snort things up, shoot things up and smoke things up ......

...... and lay himself down.
