Most Powerful Live Version of .... Love in Vain ??
Date: August 30, 2013 06:47

Years ago on this board, there used to be threads entitled " Most Powerful Live Version of ..... [insert song] " .

I thought that they were a good tool to get tips on particular recordings to look for. So, I'll try to get it started again. :

What is the " Most Powerful Live Version " of Love in Vain ??

I don't think that the official versions need to be mentioned > in this case Ya - Ya's and Stripped. What about Leeds '71 , the Unreleased Decca Live Album version from the '72 tour , 1973 Australia , 1978 , Hartford 2002 or Paris 2003 or maybe even the EchoPlex version from 4-27-2013 ??

Powerful? Don't know about that, but I always preferred the 1978 versions (JFK and Anaheim come to mind). I know most hate that version, but I thought it was a terrific reworking of it.

....Robert Johnson possibly performed a shimmering version
in some barrelhouse place but sadly in those days there was nobody around capable of capturing it ...

Powerful? Leeds 71 or Texas 78.

The L&G performance is one of the band's greatest moments on stage with Jagger standing right there watching and enjoying his lead guitarist at work.

I agree, it's a very good version. But it is nowhere near as powerful as other version, where Mick goes bananas on the last part, i. e Texas.

A candidate for the most emotional satisfying version I have heard, I think, might be on the early boot LIVER THAN YOU'LL EVER BE. The emotional side of it gives the song an extra dimension to this listener.
Added: Even more ( to a larger degree) than other versions.

I still haven't heard a more emotional satisfying take on LIV than the original studio version. The dynamics on that one is seemingly very hard to re-create.

It might have to do with Keith's simple, but very emotional slide work, as well, imo.

The studio version indeed, but since the OP is asking about concert versions, put me down for 1978.
They played it beautifully, and the impact of it in that setting was really extraordinary.

I like the Texas 78 version. Special for me because was recorded 2 days after I saw them the 1st time in Boulder. Song was a highlight of that show too. Really wish they would perform it more often.

As far as I'm concerned, the combination of final verse and Mick T's outro solo make the '72 versions unbeatable.

I have a soft spot for the Hyde Park version, the feel of the song being poignant for the occasion.

3:40 - 3:50 is ace! Love the way the slide creeps back in and the way Jaggers face reflects that sound. thumbs up

... But this one beats it! (EDIT: beats the NYC version.)
Norfolk, 6th of July 1972. More dynamics, more emotion. Listen to the two Micks towards the end.

I was actually looking for the Charlotte version, which is of equal calibre, but couldn't find it on youtube.

What about the Essen 1970 LIV? Listen to the second solo and the way Charlie and M.T. play together (about 8:32). Wonderful!

From 4:20 on:

Ya-Ya's is hard to beat.

My favorite Ronnie version would be Staples Centre, Los Angeles, Halloween 2002 DVD.

Ronnie plays an incredible solo and Keith is so impressed he gives him an approving nudge and a little kiss on the head. Ronnie responds by spinning round on his stool grinning like a fool. One of my favorite Stones moments.

Its not your fav version. .but powerful. .im with Dandi here..those '72 versions when mick goes crazy are great.
Think Altamont is another. .more "powerful" than baltimore '69.

Every time I hear a performance from this period I think the same thing. The playing sounds drunk and Ronnie's tone sounds not sorrowful, but grating, like two cats fighting. It doesn't help that Taylor and the band laid down two quintessential versions of the song.

For most Rolling Stones songs I think there are superiour versions from 1972/73 compared to 1969, but when it comes to Love In Vain; the 1969 versions are the finest ones, even though Taylors lead was better in 72
Somebody mentioned Leeds 1971......that version is way to slow and sleepy

Welcome To New York! By a mile. The second solo is completely over the top.

THere's also a really good one on the "Very Ancient, Thank You Kindly" compilation of the '72 tour on Scorpio -- forget which show it was but it's a doozy.
