Brian at the Grammy Awards, Feb. '68
Posted by: JuanTCB ()
Date: August 26, 2013 22:31

Just came across this photo which is supposedly of Brian at the Grammys in NYC, 2/29/68. I honestly can't tell if it's him or not. Something about the nose and the hair look a little off... but as there aren't many photos of the Stones in early '68 out there (aside from the Mick/Brian beard pics), it could very well be him.

Opinions?

That's not Brian.

That's what I thought, too, but the clothes, the sideburns, and the mouth do look quite a bit like him.

Does not appear to be Brian Jones.

It would be hilarious if some guy who kind of looked like Brian crashed the '68 Grammy's and nobody knew it until now.

His face kind of reminds me of Bob Geldof.

That photo in the OP shows a frame too thin and elongated to be Brian.

Could be the drummer for Taj Mahal's band, which had a Brian lookalike.

Even if it isn't (the drummer for Taj Mahal, that is), Brian's look was perhaps the prototypical rock star look for the 1964 to 1968 period, before the most emulated style became the spiky haired Keith look or the long-haired Jimmy Page look.

The guy, other than wearing similar clothes and having a similar haircut in no way looks like Brian.

The other guy looks like Troglodyte Mick

Brian was porkier by '68. He looks kind of like Bryan MacLean of the American band LOVE, but I can't be sure.

No.

Another thing to remember is that The Stones weren't even nominated for a Grammy until 1982.

But it will nonetheless be quite an interesting project to unearth the actual identity of the mystery Brian shown in the OP.

The Grammys were "small potatoes" in 1968, a boring dinner in LA for a couple of hundred record execs and their wives. Musicians essentially were not particularly welcome, and it was not televised.

Yeah, it's definitely not him - it seems obvious now but when I first saw it this morning, it kind of threw me for a loop. He was definitely fatter & more spent by '68. Oh well...

Well this is easier than Watch It or One Two. Not Brian.

Additionally, Brian couldn't get a visa for the US, which was another reason the Keith and Mick wanted to fire him, so they could tour the US.

That's OK, Juan. We've still got to establish who the Brian lookalike in that photo actually is. This could take a while....

In the meantime, perhaps the thread title could be amended to "Rolling Stones lookalikes"--that Keith-lookalike pic, "Ziggy", is hilarious!

Could it be someone from Jefferson Airplane? They were nominated for Best New Artist at the 10th Annual Grammy Awards. Is it the one in the front row, holding the guitar? In other words, Paul Kanter?

No, probably not--they would have been at the LA location. How about one of the members of Harper's Bizarre (hit: Feelin' Groovy), who were also nominated for Best New Artist? The guy in the red jacket?

No?....

There were a lot of guys who looked like that in L.A. in 1968.

I guess you're right. He probably just wandered in off the street. Now we'll never know. OK, I give up.

Hey, ya know what? I think it's Michael Clarke of The Byrds.

He's the Brianest looking guy posted in this thread (so far)....

....Except that Clarke is not quite as lean and lanky as the fellow in post no. 1, has rounder facial features especially around the chin, and the mystery Brian has thinner features around the mouth as well....

This looks more like Between The Buttons era Brian, though Brian would have pulled it off better. Brian set the style and he was long past this by early '68.
