George Thorogood was ridiculously loud when I saw him in a rather small place years ago. So much so we left.

The Outlaws were darn close in volume when I saw them in the early 80's.

Oh, have to add Cheap Trick to the list when I saw them back in the late 80's. Ears rang for days.

A show of the german band Die Toten Hosen back in 1997. My ears were ringing for days. They released I live record of this tour and on the cd label was a snippet of a newspaper article about the concert I attended stating that several people had to go to the hospital after the show due to loss of hearing.

The tour motto was: We are already deaf, you still can get

Deep Purple back in the 70's in a small college auditorium for the TV show In-Concert.

They must have had the amps turned up to "11". cool smiley

I thought my heart was going to explode from the bass guitar when they did "Smoke On The Water".

The loudest concert was AC/DC, especially when they fired the cannons during For Those About to Rock. As we walked to the car afterwards we had to literally scream at each other to hear what was being said. Most prolonged hearing issue was from Mitch Ryder. I was sitting right in line with the lead guitarist's amp and,it was high pitched and loud, had ear issues for about two weeks.

Acid Mothers Temple

Small venue, TOO @#$%& LOUD. More a physical experience than a musical one. I sought refuge from the onslaught in an arched doorway. eye popping smiley

For me it was Johnny Winter back in 74/75 timeframe for the "Still Alive and Well" album. Short show but it was so loud I felt like I had headphones on for a week as my hearing was muffled. I am sure it did some damamge to my hearing that day.

Same with seeing the MKII Deep Purple. they were deafening loud.

Another loud show I saw was ELP in the Yale bow, around the same time as JW, but they had a quad sound system and it was so clear it sounded amazing. I did not realize how loud it was until after the show when I had the same headphone effect.

In my second year of going to concerts (1971), of all bands, it was CANNED HEAT. Absolutely painful, and not a group you would expect to be that loud!

Much more recently, THEM CROOKED VULTURES. Loved the show, great seeing John Paul Jones live, but they had it, to quote Spinal Tap, "on eleven."

3 rather loud shows:

1.Aerosmith Stockholm,Sweden Konserthuset 1977 - we sat on a first floor
balcony near the stage on the left hand side - and nearly had the
Piezo Tweeters in our ears. My ears rang a couple of hours after
that show. Great show anyway!

2.Richard Hell And The Voidoids July 1978 at Max Kansas City, NYC.
Small room, triple Marshall Stacks who we´re miked to a monster P.A.
The first - and only time - i walked out after only 3 songs.

3.One of Led Zeppelin´s "warmup shows" before Knebworth, Falconer Theatre,
Copenhagen summer 1979. Extremely loud but still - great sound!

The Who( 2nd row) Boston Garden 1979. I have never heard anyone this loud. Took a hit, and Pete hit a cord. My head throbbed and went to my knees for a second.

I have three that sprang to mind right away.

Deep Purple at the Kennedy Center in D.C Pinned you to the back of your seat.

Stones at the Old Capital Centre outside of D. C 5th row center. My ears were running for a couple of days after that. There was a guy n front of me wearing headphones like they do around planes. I asked what gives and he said ' No way man. I was here last night . I am wearing these.

Leslie West in Rosslyn New York. Small club. Very small club. Dude almost shattered glasses in that place.

A few that stand out, The Who Dec. 75' Omni-Atlanta, Cheap Trick 80' Fox Theater Atlanta, Joe Satriani 1987 or 88 Fox Theater Atlanta. Joe Sat was actually annoying, too much high end.

Keef in 1992 at Ahoy Rotterdam, the Netherlands.

Went to see him with my father. Afterwards we almost couldn't hear each other all the way back home. We both had a ringing in our ears for the next few days.

The Ramones at the Back Room in Austin, TXl 1988. I was in high school and my ears rang for 3 days straight. There was a pole in the middle of the floor and I held onto it for dear life during the heavy moshing. I was bruised and deaf for days, a real badge of honor.

Not sure if you're joking or not but I saw them probably a few years later in the 70s and remember them being extremely loud! Can't remember anything they played other than a song called Crazy Horses which was actually quite good.

It's not that loud on a big modern concert stage.

It was much more of an issue in the old days [both for bands and the audience] when all the sound was from a huge backline and two PA columns beside the stage.
The levels you were subjected to if in close proximity to the speakers were much higher than you get with modern multi array sound reinforcement systems, regardless of size and venue.

...one bad apple don't spoil the whole rotten bunch....

I once worked front of stage security for an Osmond Brothers Concert at the Hollywood Palladium in the early to mid '70's. With the screaming 13 year old girls, I thought I was sent back to '64 to work a Beatles concert.
