Is Miss You a disco song?

I don't hear the "four on the floor" with the big bass drum, so I guess it is not.

Listen again... That's four on the floor.

If it is a four on the floor, it is very deep in the mix

Is Charlie hitting every beat with the bass drum? I don't hear it.

good god, that's a terrible version.
and yes, he is.
you can hear it best in the first two bars. after that, charlie adds the snare on the 2nd and 4th beats.
this is how he plays it in the studio version too.

(i didn't listen to your link beyond the first 20 seconds, he may play around with the beat more further into the song.)

There is a four on the floor but that doesn't make it the discoest of disco songs. For me it's rock with a 'discofeel'. But do feel free to do a little dance when it's on.

It's BLUES/ROCK(guitars)-SOUL(vocal)-DISCO/FUNK(beat), but you can also hear the usual great Charlie Watts Rolling Stones-style drumming on it)

Masterpiece!

(best version is the long guitarish version: more then 8 minutes!)

It's interesting that Mick chose "Miss You" to perform in the White House "Blues" concert for Obama.

It's Disco inspired.

Mick and Charlie used to go to Discos.

Whatever Miss You is, it's just commercial crap cashing in on the Disco craze.

Some fans might like it and grew up with it, but Disco/Stones is hard to take seriously.

A so called Blues/Rock band doing Disco (the shame of it all).

So a 'four on the floor' defines a disco song ?

Re: Is Miss You a disco song?

Its not disco! It is soul/funk, fashioned after Curtis Mayfield. I know it was inspired by disco, but it isn't. Now, Emotional Rescue? That is another story.

Just about the only disco tune I ever liked. Amazing it has grown into such a crowd pleaser. Maybe Mick did for his Studio 54 friends, this was where he hung out in that era

So after all IMO "Miss You" is not a disco song!

Nothing wrong with disco and this is disco.

A lot of good fun disco...I don't know why people have such a problem with certain 'categories' of music.

Bad music can be found in any category...I despise a lot of country music, but I love a lot of it too.

Who cares what it is? Labels don't matter, it's the music that counts. Just listened to the long version a couple of days ago and was hooked again by the superb guitar work. It's a great infectous track. A masterpiece.

The beauty of it is that the Rolling Stone mixed a current trend, disco, with their sound, and didn't compromise either. It's the kind of thing they'd been doing their whole career.

I love statements like 'It's the only good disco song made'. Disco was a great genre and defined a period. An urban dance music the people loved but was misunderstood and reviled by those who couldn't handle change. You know, like rock and roll.

Thing is, "four on the floor" was a pattern often played by heavy latino drummers... Plus a booom boom mix.

Thin white duck Charlie is another kind....

Whatever, this is more than physical

Four on the floor like the start of Don't Stop. (Mick going for sort of a combo Miss You/Start Me Up with Don't Stop, I think, with good results.)

Commercial crap?
And I hardly think it's a cash-in, especially when they were doing songs in this more danced up style from Hot Stuff, Fingerprint File, Heartbreaker etc onwards.
I love their more dance based tracks. (Dance is an utter gem if you ask me.) And in the case of Miss You, it gave Bill the chance to do his greatest bassline ever.

Disco was a fantastic genre .. it was only the commercial rubbish that came in the later stages that gave it a bad name. Especially with the "disco sucks" American machos.

It's got a disco bass line especially the trademark disco bass player lick of walking up the neck.

Nonsense.

The term 'rock' didn't exist when the Stones were formed.

And they've barely paid more than a passing nod to blues music for decades.

It's not disco in the sense of the Nile Rodgers / Chic organisation box set that I bought recently. But then Nile Rodgers brings the best out of disco as a genre.

Well, you could say that the Rolling Stones brought rock to Disco. And you could say that the Stones were the first to bring rock to rap, with Mick's spoken word section.

I think most consider Lou Reed the original wrapper.
