Wasn't his father a fitness instructor in the British Army?

No, his father was a physical education teacher at Dartford Grammer.

There are two different pictures of Mick posing with his basketball team mates. I'm not sure if the other has circulated or been published before though. A former classmate of Jagger's loaned me his copy - one of only 50 - some years ago. I had it copied, but no longer know where it is exactly.

Funny how our parents influence us. Mick and his grueling daily exercise routine.

They all look as if they're trying to pretend they aren't f-f-f-f-freezing.

When Mick was born, Joe Jagger was the physical education professor at a local college called Strawberry Hill but, thanks to an inborn determination, had already established a series of affiliations with national boards like the British Sports Council. He took his work home with him, creating a specific, regular physical regimen of calisthenics and weight training for Mick and his younger brother, Christopher. It was designed to build character and resolve: an aggressively healthy structure. No one would have expected, at that time, any backlash.
Joe Jagger was not relinquishing his hold on his eldest boy so easily and had what he thought was a secret weapon, another American import, equally fascinating as guitar, bass, and drums: basketball. Despite its relative lack of popularity in Britain, Joe had, by the decade’s end, established and coached the basketball program at Dartford Grammar. He made Mick the team captain and even supplied his students with the proper sneakers, imported from America. It was around this time that Mick first heard the blues.

MJ only turned out to be the best rock frontman ever...where his dad's expertise on fitness has come in rather helpful

Mick himself said about school days, "I wasn't popular, but I wasn't unpopular."

Been posted here before. Keith front row.
