This book has some interesting Stones content (mainly Keith and Anita) from the 1970-1972 era. Worth the read if you can find it.

Ya know Robert Greenfield reviewed AE Hochners book Blown Away
and said because of the huge Anita contribution it should be considered as good an anything!

I agree with this list. I'm not familiar with Mandy Aftel book on Brian Jones but I'll take a look.

It's a bit of a kiss ass, but there's some good informative stuff in there taken from Aftel's own interviews with Keith, Stu etc etc.

The Charone book is odd, but interesting to me because so much of it is about Brian as seen through Keith's eyes. Great again because this too is based on fresh interviews, not just rehashed stuff from other people's books.

STP/Journey Through America with the Rolling Stones by Robert Greenfield is fantastic. True Adventures by Booth is good as well. After that I find the quality drops. Sanchez's book is good but dubious and I enjoyed Life and Stone Alone.

Agree about STP, and if I knew what dubious meant, I would ask you why you thought Sanchez's book was dubious! Ah what the hell, why do you...smoking smiley

I agree, Richard Elman's book is very good. Have not read it in years but he was a serious journalist so the perspective and writing have a more literary feel. I still remember his description of the heat in Texas, very poetic.

STP is also very good. But that was Greenfield in his prime. What he writes now is not worth reading.

Michael Lyndon's account of the 69 tour for Ramparts is another just really well-written intelligent piece aobut the Stones. Not a book but long enough to be included in several anthologies.

My first deep introduction to the group's history, especially Brian, was in 1972 through David Dalton's paperback coffee table sized book simply called 'Rolling Stones'.

Sorry to hijack.

Any Stones books that cover the music, recording sessions, etc? I'd rather read that then about their private lives.

As I recall Sean's book was quite worthwhile.

Right on
This is another excellent first hand account of the 69 tour and Altamont.

I forgot two of my favourites...

Stoned and 2Stoned - Andrew Loog Oldham

Currently re-re-reading Simon Wells - Butterfly On A Wheel - The Great Rolling Stones Drugs Bust.

There's a lot of good information in those pages. The chapter about 1965 - 1966, the introduction of LSD and the evolving unease between musicians and the press is particularly good. The real goods and details come out once it gets in to the actual Redlands bust.

Ordered Sean Egan's "Making of LIB".

Also bought Rolling Stones: Complete Recording Sessions. Anyone have an opinion on this book?

Accurately crediting who played what on all of The Rolling Stones recordings is a big and near impossible task, so some errors are to be found. However, Martin Elliott's book is the best available source in printed form for dates, places and instrument credits.
