What was so bad about Mick's 1978 outfit?

I know a lot of people hated Mick's outfit on this tour,
but I've always liked it...even better than his '75 and '81 oufits.
Like that tour, it WAS different. The Destroy-Sex Pistols shirt
was a bit much, but everything else I thought was great,
and that includes the other band members. Keith and Ronnie looked great, too.
And Charlie wore the same blue t-shirt at every gig.
I do remember reading an interview with Mick at the time saying
he bought that yellow jacket he wore on the '78 tour at a place called
Ian's Boutique (London or New York, maybe?} for $40.
I don;t know why those outfits get a lot of bad press.
The Fender Strat looked good, too.
He should go back to using that instead of these guitars
a 14-year old uses in his first garage band.
Comments?
Cheers, all.

TOMK "The Fender Strat looked good, too.

I don't think the guitars he has used over the years look like a 14 year olds. He used Ronnies Silver Topped Les Paul in 75, a Gibson SG in 81, several different Strats (or at least Strat type) in 89 & 94 that had custom pick guards, If I remember corectly he used a Black Les Paul during Miss You during B2B and during LICKS a Tele and a Strat. His guitars do look distinctive next to Keith and Ron's.

Regarding his stage outfits, I think he found the perfect combination starting with his Live Aid performance. He has pretty much stuck with Jacket, Shirt, T-Shirt Black pants ever since. Thank god he ditched those jumpsuits, they looked silly. Off Topic, but semi-related......have you noticed that Keith stopped wearing boots and blue jeans on-stage since 89 ? Now he wears what look like those black stretchy pants and old school type sneakers. Ronnie has stuck with the jeans and either jogging sneakers or basketball type kicks.

The Round guitar Ronnie played during LICKS. What brand of Guitar is that ? Anyone know? Also, wish Ron would start using his Silver Topped Les Paul again, but it probably weighs a ton on him at this point. Keith mentioned that he started using the semi-hollow Gibsons on-stage cause they are light and the Tele's were getting heavy after 2 hours.

Well, when I saw them at the Forum in '75, he was using
Ronnie's Strat (which is the same guitar Dylan used
on the David Letterman Show back in '84, by the way),
and I thought the SG in '81 and '82 was a good, but odd
choice as SGs are really loud guitars. Since '81 and '82,
I haven't been a fan of the guitars he's been playing.
As for the outfits, a costumer friend of mine gave me a pair
of those stretch-type pants that Mick and Keith have been wearing
for the past few tours, and they are much easier to move around in
than blue jeans are. I did a few gig with them and noticed the difference.
It comes down to creture comforts, I guess.

It's the last tour where the critics were prepared to just listen to the music without questoning the Stones ages.

It was the cap that did it for me...

I will always have a soft spot in my heart for the 78 tour. I loved Jagger's outfit. In New Orleans he wore the white jacket with brown leather pants. Very, very cool. Jagger was and is the king.

Nicked from Johnny Rotten, that's why.

I didn't realise people did slag off the clothes/look much on the '78 tour. Looked fine to me apart from Mick's cap which did irritate me (whereas I thought the 'Destroy' shirt was a nice understated nod towards punk & that they shared a lot in common).

"It's the last tour where the critics were prepared to just listen to the music without questoning the Stones ages." - This may have been the case in the US but in England I remember well there was a lot of sniping & sneering about their age from '76 to '79. In fact the jibes were a lot more vitriolic then than the last decade or so where it's usually quite jokey and semi-affectionate.

What was with the orange pants with the blue patches? a little to short or was that the idea. I saw them in Boulder in 81 and there was a guy walking around with orange parachute pants on looking like a dork.

Thankfully they were never that bad again.

It was the red hat. And the matching lipstick. Ugh.

Let's face it, '78 was the height of sartorial elegance compared to the fashion disaster that was '81/'82!

Mick attempted to dress like Jimmy Cliff and other black reggae and r & b greats, but the neon color made him look like a clown instead.
Still though, he looked even more ridiculous in the padded trousers and football jerseys he wore in '81.
That was ridiculous.

Too True!

That cap was a bad look though in 1978...

I kind of liked that 78 get up, it was a real punk look
which was what mick was trying to capture on that tour
which is still the strangest tour they have ever done
very very short with no euro gigs, could have been one of the best
if they just would have taken it more serious, it was a waste of a great album imho

They all looked cool in '78, hair, colthes guitars and all. '81 was the beginning of the end. Today Mick has boring clothes and Keith is nothing anymore. Sorry but that's the truth. Army jackets, bandanas and those shoes are just ugly and boring.
