Attracting New Fans

I've never understood the notion that music has to be "current" for the listener to accept and like it. I started listening music by the Stones (and Beatles, Dylan, etc.) because I didn't like what I was hearing on the radio (early '90s). There were a hell of a lot of CDs outside the "New Release" bin, and exploring the back catalog of a band like the Stones was highly satisfying. I'm still doing it 20 years later.

It doesn't matter how old you are or what era you live in. All you really need is a copy of Hot Rocks and you are on your way.

Lots of young fans were singing Miss You, SFTD and IORR on the tube after the show. The after-show mood was magic on the way back to Victoria thumbs up

Kids would probably be befuddled hearing something that wasn't created by a computer, but rather by the recording of actual instruments.

For the Stones and their fans, in 1965 it was a gesture of defiance and rebellion.

In 2013 its more likely to be the result of an age-related medical problem.

Defiance and rebellion? Against whom, a petrol station attendant? They asked to use the loo, and the attendant refused, so they used the wall instead. Where's the social revolution in that? When you gotta go, you gotta go.

In the pit at Philly 2, next to me a 14 y/o fan with his dad. Kid knew all the songs, and rocked his ass off the whole night. I love seeing that.

When you say young fans, how old, on average? My teenage niece will have absolutely nothing to do with the Stones. She even grew out of Adelle and Rihanna. These kids today have the attention span of a fly. Even if you could get them to listen to the Stones they would be finished with them in a week or less. You must be talking about kids in their twenties and thirties? I call them kids because I am as old as Mick.

Yes, it happens, but as soon as they get a mind of their own they want nothing to do with what their parents like. Generally, speaking.

In many cases, teenagers are discovering the Stones (thanks to Youtube, firstly) without any urge from their parents. I know teens who love the Stones and download band's songs and albums, while their parents don't even know what the hell "Sticky Fingers" and "Let It Bleed" is. I feel happy when i see that!...

The good stuff always stands the test of time & in many cases actually gets better with age like fine wine. Why I don't think they (Mick) should worry about being "hip". I don't think the Stones are in any danger of having to hit the Native American casino circuit anytime soon like so many of their contemporaries have. I do admit I would enjoy seeing commercials every inning break of baseball games. "Next week @ Emerald Queen Casino, entertainment capitol of the northwest...the Rolling Stones!"spinning smiley sticking its tongue out

For a long stretch, I don't think it was cool for youngsters to like the Stones, unlike Led Zepplin. But, my hunch is that is changing as the new wave/punk generation that derided the Stones as corporate sell outs has mellowed and some of their kids are beginning to discover rock and roll and blues.

My son is a fan because he plays guitar and is open to listening to what I suggest, but my girls...not so much. My friend's 15 year old daughter does give me hope though, she is crazy for the band, discovered them all on her own and spent hours trying to find a cheap ticket to see them in DC. I was happy to hear from her Mother that she did get to the concert and then pronounced to her preplexed Mom that they were "the best band in the world." smiling smiley

The Stones are in transit between being "dad rock" (uncool by definition) and "grandparents' music" (possibly cool, provided you discover it for yourself). It was lovely to see all generations, and so many twenties and teens and even younger, all having a great time together in Hyde Park, and going home singing. I really hope they do some more like these and Glastonbury.

PS: Warhorse haters please note that Miss You is the one they all dance to, and Sympathy and Miss You are the ones they go home singing.

This was absolutely the case where I was in Tier 3. Loads of 20-somethings in my section, and everyone went wild to Miss You. More than most other songs. In fact their enthusiasm was infectious and really enhanced my own enjoyment - of Miss You, and the whole show.

Miss You was played very well this tour, as was Start Me Up. Two songs that I could have lived quite well without seeing again, but am glad I did.

Well, I wasn't a teenager anymore five years ago, but Youtube played an important part in making me a fan, I would go as far as to say it is what made me a fan. It can be a huge influence and the Stones must know that, allowing all these videos with their music to exist there.

Nobody in my family (or among frineds) listens to the Stones in particular, I discovered them on my own. There were a few Beatles compilations at home and I knew an amount of Beatles songs in consequence, but no Stones song besides "Satisfaction". Or at least I thought so, because on my research I found out that I actually also knew "Wild Horses", "Sympathy", "Angie" and "Paint It Black" (the latter one I had always loved), probably from the radio and from TV/movies, but I didn't know, that these were done by the Rolling Stones. So when I found out (on Wikipedia, I think) that "Paint It Black" was a Rolling Stones song after being reminded of its existence by a TV spot that used it, and knowing they are this "other" famous band besides the Beatles, the Stones got my interest.

The movie "Shine a Light" also had an effect around that time. While I don't think it is their best performance now, it infected me, when I saw it on TV, because they showed so much energy and joy in their playing. I didn't almost know any song by then. (One of my thoughts - I think on "Connection" - was, that it was good Mick Jagger usually sings and not this other guy, now known to me as Keith Richards, whose two solo albums I meanwhile posses, because I have learned to love his voice grinning smiley , still not that much on this "Connection" though). Why did I decide to watch it on TV? I suppose the Stones and their marketing machine were succesful. I remembered news pictures from the red carpet at the premiere of the movie at the Berlin Filmfestival, something about a movie about the famous Rolling Stones done by this famous director Martin Scorsese, which made me think this movie could be worth watching.

I then started to look deeper via the internet and most of all Youtube and discovered a treasure.

And the coolest thing about The Stones is how deep you can dig and dig and dig and keep finding new gems. I remember back when DTV had a Stones music channel on their music section, and I would trun it on and I was stunned at how many songs they would play and play and play without ever repeating, or even playing the "popular songs", it was Grand Canyon sized.

I would add SFTD. I was tired to death of it prior go the tour, but they really found a way to make it swing, imo.

And, no, this has nothing to do with guitar solos smiling smiley
