Someone needs to mention Spirit. Any of their first four LPs, especially "The 12 Dreams of Dr. Sardonicus", their masterpiece. Though it came out in 1970.

Yes, this was the Donovan album that I was not able to identify. Others have already given the title, but here is the picture of the cover with the track listing.

I have one other suggestion that seems not to have been mentionned. I don't know where I have put this album, and I have not listened to it for many years. It is an album that might perhaps be categorized otherwise as most important, but to me it has some psychedelic qualities. As I remember it, especially as to wonderfully strange melody structures. The only album that I have listened to by this group (at that time of two musicians).

The Incredible String Band (3. album) THE HANGMAN'S BEAUTIFUL DAUGHTER

I would like to read other posters' personal reflections on it.

Every track on this album is brilliant, IMO, especially A Very Cellular Song. But I wouldn't call it psychedelic (or many of the albums in the thread, actually).

Would Moody Blues fit the bill or are they more of a classical/prog rock type of band? Anyway, Nights in White Satin is one of my all time favorite songs, so I guess I'd have to say their album Days of Future Passed would rank the highest, followed by In Search of a Lost Chord. I think Justin Hayward has one of the best voices in the universe. A bit of an exaggeration, but he's awesome nontheless.

I also came to this album fairly late on. I got it in the mid 70s but never fully digested it until very recently. Then, boom. I got it. It's far ahead of its time and was released in Sept 66 so it's really up there with Revolver as one of the truly first psychedelic albums. My fave tracks at first were the obvious ones - Sunshine Superman, Season Of The Witch, Guinnevere, Three Kingfishers but recently the one that does it for me has been Celeste - the album's final track. How a 20 year old could write such heavy, worldly wise lyrics is beyond me.

Here's a video for it.

3. Stones: Their Satanic...
4. Beatles: Revolver + Sgt. Pepper
5. The Doors: The Doors + Strange Days
6. Daevid Allen: Good morning (from the '70's, I know)

and to mention just a single: Beach Boys: Good vibrations.

Freak Out! - Mothers of Invention

I think Zappa was too clean for psychedelic stuff, he had everything under control, Great stuff though.

You didnĀ“t HAVE to be stoned to play it grinning smiley

I think it's even impossible to play it when you're stoned - at least Zappa wouldn't allow it.

And thank God for that or we wouldn't have the amazing music of Little Feat!!

As some here know Zappa kicked Lowell George out of his band after hearing his new composition "Willin". Thanks Frank!

As far as the thread goes my votes go to:

Beatles- Rubber Soul, Revolver and Sgt. Peppers
Grateful Dead - entire catalog
Jefferson Airplane- Surrilistic Pillow
Pink Floyd- Dark side of the Moon
Moody Blues - Days of Future Passed
Hendrix-Are you Experienced

Arguably, some of the best psychedelic music came out after the actual "era" was past. Obviously the appeal still held for the musicians, still does imho. peace

1. Jimi Hendrix Experience: Are You Experienced (1967), Axis Bold As Love (1967), Electric Ladyland (1968)
2. The Doors - The Doors (1967)
3. Cream - Disraeli Gears (1967)
4. Jefferson Airplane - Surrealistic Pillow
5. Grateful Dead - Live Dead (1969)

6. Pink Floyd - Ummagumma (1969)
7. 13th Floor Elevators - Easter Everywhere (1967)
8. Blue Cheer - Vincebus Eruptum (1968)
9. Love - Forever Changes (1967)
10. Quicksilver Messenger Service - Happy Trails (1969)

This is an interesting thread because it's fun to see how different listeners differentiate between artrock and progressive rock (King Crimson, Velvet Underground, Moody Blues, Syd Barrett era Pink Floyd) and what I've always considered psychedelic rock (guitar-driven, feedback, references to drugs and/or mental perception, multi-layered sounds, tape tricks like flanging, speed fluctuations, backwards parts, interludes between tracks or within longer ones, and plenty of oddball lyrics).

I think as music progressed, it became easier discern art and progrock -- music that explored new sounds or relied heavily on new instrumentation -- from music that was obviously made to enhance psychedelic experiences like the shoegazer music of the late 1980s and early 1990s.

Its not a favorite of mine but Led Zeppelin's first album had some psychedelic twinges to it, namely Dazed and Confused.
On that note, the Yardbirds Roger the Engineer is a great album.
