In the East Village St Marks Bar in 81

Starting in 69 and moving forward.
Any response would be appreciated!

By surprise visits, I presume you mean shows that were announced/confirmed at short notice as opposed to the theatre shows on tours such as the 1971 UK tour and the Licks tour which were ticketed shows sold some months in advance.

I dont know if the 4 shows at the Lyceum Ballroom and Savile Theatre in December 1969 were announced much in advance.

Since then :

El Mocambo, Toronto 4 & 5 March 1977 (2 shows)
Oshawa, Ontario CNIB Benefit 22 April 1979 (2 shows - the New Barbarians gigs were announced in advance, but the Stones' appearance at them wasnt)
Sir Morgans Cove, Worcester, Ma 14.9.81
Capital Theatre, Aberdeen 26 May 1982
Apollo, Glasgow, 27 May 1982
Playhouse, Edinburgh, 28 May 1982
100 Club, London, 31 May 1982
100 Club, London 23 Feb 1986
Toads, Newhaven 12 August 1989
RPM, Toronto 19 July 1994
Paradiso, Amsterdam 26 & 27 May 1995
Olympia, Paris 3 July 1995
Brixton Academy, London 19 July 1995
Horseshoe Tavern, Toronto 4 Sep 1997
Double Door, Chicago 18 Sep 1997
Shepherds Bush Empire, London 8 June 1999
Palais Royale, Toronto 16 August 2002
Juilliard, New York 10 May 2005 (not exactly a small room, but it was an unannounced gig)
Phoenix Theatre, Toronto 10 August 2005
Trabendo, Paris October 2012
Echoplex, LA April 2013

The following shows were private, corporate events which were only officially confirmed at short notice :
Pepsi Tent, Kona, Hawaii 21 Jan 1998 (pepsi)
Hard Rock, Las Vegas 16 November 2002 (David Bonnerman (sp?)
MNAC, Barcelona, 12 July 2007 (Deutsche Bank)
Mogador Theatre, Paris, October 2012 (Carmigniac)

The following performances werent gigs as such, but video shoots where the band played a few songs or (supposedly) jammed in between takes

St Marks Bar & Grill, New York, Aug 1981 (Waiting on a Friend)
Bains- Douches, Paris, October 1983 (Undercover of the Night)
Bagleys Warehouse, London, Sept 1995 (Like A Rolling Stone - the only video shoot performance where the songs played have been authenticated)

About the last paragraph: Didn't they also play a bit at the club were they made the SOL video?

Marquee Club? (71)
The impromptu 1983-10-18 "gig" played at the Bains Douches Paris club while shooting the "Undercover" vid counts?

I didnt forget it.

Firstly. No..they didnt play a small show before the 2007 European tour. Or after the Streets of Love video shoot.

I didnt list the Licks theatre shows (as I explained) for a simple reason. The OP asked about 'surprise' gigs. The theatre shows on that tour (aside from the warm up gig in Toronto) were all announced and sold online MONTHS in advance. Someone mentioned the Astoria show in London (27.8.03). I bought my ticket for that show in December 2002. Utrecht 16/8/03 was announced on 2.12.02 and went on sale five days later. See here - [www.iorr.org]

The Hard Rock show in Vegas in February 1998 was also sold weeks in advance.

The Shepherds Bush gig in 1999, however was only confirmed 36 hours before it took place.

Not sure about the Marquee club show in 71 as it was a TV special and before my time and I dont know anyone who was at it, but the tour that preceded it was all theatre shows and shows would have been sold in advance as normal.

The Stones' appearance at the 121212 show at Madison Square Garden was more of a 'surprise' appearance than any of the Licks theatre shows as they only confirmed it five days in advance. Not exactly a 'small room' though!

I could also have added the guest appearances with Muddy Waters at the Quiet Knight in Chicago (July 1978) and Checkerboard Lounge (Nov 1981) but they werent really Stones appearances as some band members were absent on both occasions.

No they did not, they did, however, play a couple of songs for the press event which I think would fall into the same cathegory as jams for WOAF, Undercover and LARS videos. Here's the review from [www.iorr.org]

Friday June 1
Happy Birthday Ronnie! And sure Ronnie was first in and first out at the rehearsals venue tonight. Today was mostly a press event. Local TV stations recorded a few songs in the studio - see list below. The songs have probably been broadcasted on Belgian TV already.

They warmed up with bits of "Honky Tonk Women", then they did seven quick takes lasting for approx three minutes each of the following songs: "Rough Justice", "I'll Go Crazy", "Monkey Man", "Tumbling Dice" and "Rocks Off".

Then Ronnie and soon after Mick left the site. Keith, Charlie and the rest of the band stayed and did some takes on songs by Keith. They did "Nearness Of You", "How Can I Stop" and "All About You" several takes.

The list of songs performed tonight for the video session:

Rough Justice
I'll Go Crazy
Monkey Man
Rough Justice (take 2)
Tumbling Dice
I'll Go Crazy (take 2)
Rocks Off

On Tuesday they did a great version of the Sly and the Family Stone song "Thank You (Falettinme Be Mice Elf Agin)". Then on Thursday they tried out another great Soul/Funk song: "I'll Go Crazy" by James Brown. This as also the song they did for the press shoot tonight in Vilvoorde. During the press event they did a quick version of just 3 minutes, but this is a song they could easily do a lot more fun with, including a 2nd start, and the crowd will love it.

Then a long break, and after Ronnie and Mick left, they did these:

Nearness Of You
How Can I Stop
All About You xx
